No-one's mentioned WD40 yet - fairly benign compared with some of the solvents mentioned upthread - and everyone's got a can of it under the sink, right?

Quite right.

General principles

1 Read the manufacturer's instructions. (The floor not the tyre.)

2 Try on an inconspicuous part first before committing, as above.

Hierarchy of solvents: start at the top

1 Alcohols, and isopropyl alcohol is an excellent first line cleaner.

2 Petrol-type stuff. WD-40 is petrol-like with some residual oil. Most proprietary removers of sticky stuff are petrol-like, they might be conveniently packaged but they're much more expensive.

3 White spirit, paint thinner etc.

4 Acetone and similar. Includes old-fashioned nail varnish remover (not what's now available) and automotive brake and clutch cleaner. Very powerful solvent, but can damage plastics and paint. Unpleasant stuff to have around because of harm to people and other animals and the risk of ignition.

Abrasives, and I wouldn't use these on any pretty domestic surface unless I had to

Toothpaste (as above), Duraglit and Brasso are excellent mild abrasives.

to remove similar marks. It's another solvent, like many of the above suggestions, but it has shifted stubborn marks for me.

Try a hidden area of vinyl first, just in case, and keep all the doors / windows open as it is very solvent-y.

I was going to suggest something similar sticky stuff remover, I take it you've tried an eraser on it.

This is a 13 year old thread resurrection by a first time poster yesterday (just before CH's reply), whose post has since been removed.

A sure sign of a careless record collector.
