Hello
Can anyone help in suggesting the best way to cycle from Llangollen to Oswestry finishing at The Premier Inn? this will be a group of 12 cyclists doing a 3 day charity event. If there is a quicker route or safer route than using the A5 I would be pleased for the help.
Cheers

Re: Best way from LLangollen to Oswestry
You could either use the canal from Llan to Trevor or the A road on the north side.
Peddle across the akkie / aqueduct (and look down!)
Then into church and on to Oswestry via Weston Rhyn

The canal from Trevor to Chirk is amazing (x2 aqueducts , x 2 tunnels - short and long and a woodland cutting) and quite OK to cycle along (take a torch for the tunnels). There are road hop-overs if you wish to avoid the tunnels. I would push across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (unless it is clear of walkers- and you will need a head for heights!). Don't even think of cycling on the A5, it is a very fast, noisy & busy road.

A quicker way than the A5? No. It depends on the time of year. Outside the summer months and outside school runs time, the A5's not too bad.
As suggested above, the canal is good for most of the way, but there is a section around Chirk marina that hasn't been given the path upgrade, hence it can be quite muddy. There are also two long tunnels to navigate. You can avoid those if you wish, by taking the B5605 as it crosses the canal, to the A5 for 200 yds, then turn right, then left for a way back to Chirk. Turn right at mini roundabout, then over 2nd roundabout and back down to Chirk aqueduct.
Or if your legs fancy it, there's a scenic hill route straight out of Llangollen (steep for a bit) up onto the ridge between the Dee and Ceriog valleys, then follow the ridge road in the Chirk direction.

If you take the direct route out of Llangollen, it is very steep - c. 1 in 4 in places and not a short climb. There are great views at the top though.
If you go to Weston Rhyn, take the road out towards Oswestry, but turn left very soon afterwards. This will take you on a very quiet 'back road'; you'll come into Oswestry, with the old Hill Fort on your left.

Forgot to mention - there is a small cafe by the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, lovely place sit and watch the world go by. Here is the aqueduct website - we don't build 'em like this anymore!

The canal path was upgraded last year - no more problems with mud.
