TDF and IGH's

Post by Drake »

I've been watching most of the TDF on ITV 4 this year . They have been displaying alot of photo's of previous winners . I don't know why, but i just wondered if anybody in the past had attempted the TDF using an IGH . I would suspect not . Totally impractical springs to mind .

No less impractical than single speed and many tours have been won on those.

From memory, there were a couple of TdF riders on Sturmey Archer hubs back in the day; before World War 1 or just after. The SA Heritage website has a poster advertising it.

I quite often ride an SA hub, but not quite like that...

BTW there is a very interesting post in this thread;

http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-778887.html

by 'tcs' which throws some light on the competition use of the SA gear vs derailleurs in the UK.

Very interesting, thanks. Shame to think of SA failing due to lack of investment and development.
