Pogies...are they Madness?

Post by Urticaria »

Do they work on a bike? Do they just become soaking wet if left on permanently? Would the kayaking ones fit?
Would I do as well to gaffa tape some halved milk cartons to my handlebars? I've been looking for some cheap ones for over a year, and never seen any.

Hacked milk cartons seem like a sound idea to me. Most of the effects of riding in the cold must be wind chill.

My partner fits Pogies to her commute bike whenever it starts to snow.

for an inexpensive DIY approach, you could try modifying the kind of mitt that comes with some windscreen scrapers.

You will need to do a little sewing, for sure. Maybe some velcro closures to secure them would be a good idea, too. Also I'm not sure they are big enough in every case, or waterproof even. But... they can be a cheap place to start; I have seen them in the pound shop.

cheers

No they're quite different.

Neoprene cycling pogies available here (and for drop bars too).
If I used them on a bike that I was leaving in the rain, I'd fold them over and strap down with a toe strap so the wrist hole wasn't exposed/was pointing down.

Hotpogs are about £30 for the basic model, they are what I use for fatbikeing on the snowpack in the winter. They are pretty waterproof too.

I can see how they can make a big difference as I used the equivalent on a motorcycle and it make a world of difference. So the short answer is no, they are not madness.

I do wonder if you can get away with mitts and those in winter?
