:D  No, you're definitely in the right forum. There will now be many pages of earnest and impassioned debate of what the exact definition is, who is allowed to be one, exactly how it must be done, how it compares with every other genre of cycling but most importantly how everybody else is doing it wrong.

What's the definition of a cycle tourist - whatever you want it to be.

And me, too, except for the beard, the sandals and the socks...and probably the 'old' as well!

a cycle tourist is some one who likes to get to distant places the hard way with the maximum of sweat. A sub species of masochist, in terminal decline, soon to become extinct.

A cycle tourist distinguishes themselves from other "tourists" by going from place to place by bicycle. But only cyclists now do this and this is a new phenomenon IMV. Previous generations might have gone from place to place on foot, by canoe, by car, hitch-hiking and so forth and certainly by bike - that's what sustained the YHA. This doesn't seem to be true anymore - people fly or drive to a single destination (and do exciting things) but stay around their destination. It may well be true, as mercalia suggests, that we are indeed the last "tourists" and an old and dying breed.

What is "place to place"?
Does it include cycling to work or a Sunday ride or does it have to be on holiday or overnight? Do you have to have a saddlebag?

Well, that's me out then. I've been cycling since the 50's and I've never carried a Primus stove. I think the definition should be applied to anyone who, when contemplating a journey thinks 'can I do this on my bike?'
