Does anyone know, or have recently ridden the old railway line between Whitby and Scarborough? What sort of condition is it in, and what kind of surface? Thanks.

Did it on my Dawes Galaxy,32mm tyres, laden with panniers...a little rough around Ravenscar but rideable

I tried to ride it from Scarborough-Boggle Hole last autumn, on 28mm tyres, and only got a mile or two out of Scarborough before giving up. Maybe it's better in the dry, but several days of rain had left the surface heavy and claggy, and my tyres kept sinking into the cinders and bogging down. I definitely wouldn't try it again unless I had much fatter tyres.

Hi. I rode this route last Sept, also on a fully loaded galaxy. The initial few miles out of Scarborough was hard work, rainwater had scoured deep ruts running down the track in places causing a lot of careful riding from ridge to ridge , after that surface was good. It seemed the route was one long drag up from Scarborough and then a pleasant ride down into Whitby. Very easy to do in a days ride. Nomisp

I rode the last bit from Ruswarp into Whitby last week. That bit was muddy, so I dread to think what the rest of the route is like at the moment.

The A171's a shorter route if you're on your own, MC.

Thanks folks. Just wanted to check before hauling 2 tandems to Whitby. P.s. meant to write 'bridleway'-ended up sounding like the policeman from Allo, allo.
