Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
Does anyone know the year of this bike?
I am thinking about 1992-1994, as I have a 1995 Galaxy that has the bar end shifters.

Are those Weinmann cantilevers? If so I'd be thinking more like 88/89.
There'll be a Dawes expert along soon.

Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
it has sachs ARIS 3 x6 gearing, sachs chainset, and (probably) a screw-on freewheel, maillard/sachs hubs. Those are weinmann cantis; I think they only made those for a few years. I'd guess around 88/89 too, but the approximate year will be marked on the hubs if they are original ones.
cheers

Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
mmm.. my dad had a 1989 one and that had the oval biopace chainwheel. did they fit them to all bikes in that era?
Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
in 1989 Biopace was well on the way out IIRC. Might have been NOS that, perhaps?
There is a 1993 dawes catalogue here
http://www.koedjoinery.com/Dawes_1993_1.pdf
which shows galaxies with shimano 3x7 transmissions and rather nasty CrMo unicrown forks...
3x6 indexed transmissions would have been 'current' between about 1986 and 1989 more or less
cheers

Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
mmm.. look like a pre 1993 model then
Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
Oooh, this exact model was my first decent bike. My, did I save up for it. Dawes did one with grey decals in 89 and changed the colour to white for 1990, the frame colour stayed the same.
I sold it ten years ago but saw it riding about just a few weeks ago! The chap thought I was mad when I stopped him and told him to LOOK AFTER IT.

Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
some component history;
IIRC 7s 'Hyperglide' arrived in 1989 model year (so perhaps late 1988) in the top MTB/touring groups and suddenly everything else was obsolete. Prior to that MTB groups were 6s Uniglide and road stuff was 7s uniglide.
Biopace started in 1983 and became Biopace II (rounder...) in 1987, and then biopace HP (almost round) in 1989. SG chainrings (round!) were specced from 1990 onwards on shimano groups.
ARIS systems were launched in ~1986 but 6s ARIS was almost obsolete from the start, because 7s was already commonplace on road bikes.
[edit; just seen the previous post; 1990 is quite believable but a 6s index system would have been looking a bit low-tech by then]
cheers

With reference to the title, and of no help whatsoever..
Have you tried buying it flowers?

A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
I've found a pic of my dads 1989 (Biopace) Super Galaxy, here:

And it looks pretty much the same:

They are both 5 speeds
So it looks like a 1990 model. Or something very close to that year.

Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
well the frames are similar but none of the other transmission components are common to both those bikes. The super galaxy has the deore 6s index system (actually 1989 deore II rear mech and 1988 deore crankset I think) and is pretty much all shimano equipped.
By contrast the ARIS equipped blue galaxy is pretty much a no-shimano machine
cheers

Re: Need help dating this Dawes Galaxy
Blimey, when did touring bikes go to 7 speed then? 5/6 seems a bit old hat for high end bikes of 1990. Or did they occupy a bit more of the budget end of the spectrum back then? Memory's a funny thing
