value bike for fitness mad teen boy

Post by Wenger786 »

My son seems to have outgrown his bike.

Likes to go off road - just paths /bridleways around where we live in SE England.

Has ideas to do a London - Brighton, or even Paris ride sometime.

Into fitness / weights/ sport.

Not sure of his weight right now (athletic strong build) - about 5' 9" now (16) likely to get to 5'11" 170lb I'd guess.

Anyone a bike - current one is a Raleigh Hard tail Mountain bike - which he has inherited and is starting to use regularly - but its clearly too small for him already.

Cheers in advance & happy riding.

Welcome. Sounds like recipe for more than one and time to get a part time job. If he is that keen and wants to go on to do charity he will quickly want an off road bike and a lightweight road bike.....

Sound like a cyclocross bike would be ideal.

Hi,

When your young any bike will do, (I dimly recall), but it helps if it
fits, which is true for me nowadays, what is still true the bike has
no real effect on how fit you can get, only your competitive speed.

FWIW this is what I think is the best value all round do everything bike :

Well it was two days ago when it was £200, and a bargain with £80 off.

Thanks I'll take a look at those suggestions. Open to more though.

This is Wiggle's "own" make/brand but seems not a bad spec for the money.

Here's a review from LCC.

I don't have one of these but will consider one for my next bike so I can't personally comment on the bike.

Good luck.

Surly Cross-Check is reported to be fairly nippy and, as it will take fat tyres and/or guards, it looks like a good do-everything bike.

The force is strong in your young one, he should come to the dark side:-
