I did my first few audaxes on an aluminium MTB fitted with drop bars and 26 x 1.25" Pasela's. The ride was harsh and uncomfortable. I then switched to 2" wide Schwalbe Big Apples, which transformed the ride. Comfort on a long ride is far more important than squeezing out every last bit of speed IMO. That's why I ride a Moulton now... :D

IMO the Big Apples roll really well - Looking back over my times there wasn't that much of a performance hit compared to the Pasela's.

Ty the Schwalbe Marathon Racer as it gives road bike performance with normal mountain bike slick grip.

you could first of all to spend nowt try pumping up the tyres harder than you have them, that is if you havent already got them hard? I use 1.75 Marathons and pumped harder they run well. of course you still have the weight matter

Hi Mercalia, I pump the Marathons up to 60 psi. I think the max is 65

I'd recommend City Jet 26 x 1.5". Have run these for years on my rigid MTB commuter. Currently £11.23 each at Tredz, or £18.95 a pair from Absolute Cycles on ebay.

Tried some lightweight Specialized 1" slicks, not as comfortable and no faster.

Schwalbe AV12A tubes are the best fit, thinner and lighter than your typical MTB/ATB tube.

Also consider Conti Sport Contacts in 1.6" width. I do have a little used pair of Sport Contacts in 1.3" width but the reason they have not had much use was the harsh ride they gave on my Carerra Subway, the 1.6" were fine though and quite quick.

Marathon Plus on 100kms. You then appreciate a quicker, more comfortable tyre on the 200kms more

Marathon supreme 1.6" for long distances (mine have lasted more than 11,000 miles so far with 2-3 punctures).
