What year Currys stopped selling bicycles?
What year Currys stopped selling bicycles?
The fact that Currys sold bicycles has always seemed strange to me: Growing up in the 80's I knew it as the pile-it-high electricals shop.
Does anyone know exactly when they stopped bikes/bike bits?

I remember seeing a C5 in Currys in Jarrow circa 1985, that was a cycle of sorts. It was in the window for a very long time.

My parents bought me my first proper bike from Curry's on 5th May 1958. It cost £16 2s 6d. I remember the frame number, how sad is that

They had a shop selling what I think of as the traditional mix of stuff ie bikes, toys and small electrical items in Bradford city centre well into the 1990's. Not a "lightweight" shop by then. Going back to the 1960's they had one in Leeds (corner of Eastgate and Vicar Lane) which did proper "lightweight" kit. I remember needing a specific spare for a Simplex (Juy Record 60?) mech and the chap just turned round and got it from a little drawer which was one of possibly hundreds behind him.

well even stranger than Currys and bikes is Woolworths and motor bikes, well mopeds - for a short time they sold the tomos moped ( I bought one from the Croydon Woolworths ) £199 I think it was delivered and on the road.
Re: What year Currys stopped selling bicycles?
I bought a mtb from Woolworths, I thought they would sell assembled ones but I had to carry a giant box home.

There's nothing strange about Currys and bikes. Henry Curry , the founder, was a bicycle builder and started up shops to sell his bikes. It would have been strange if Currys hadn't sold bikes.

News to me that Currys is still around. The last time I walked into one Winston Churchill was PM.
Re: What year Currys stopped selling bicycles?
I've just come across a Currys bicycle, are they worth anything? Seems in pretty decent shape.

They were built by Raleigh in Nottingham.
Badge engineered. They probably stopped retailing bikes sometime during the late 1960's , as the market declined .

depends when you are talking about. Originally Currys bicycles were manufactured in their own Leicester factory. In 1931 or 1932 this closed and Currys-badged bicycles were then made by Hercules. Hercules was sold to T.I. in the 1940s. T.I. eventually bought Raleigh as well in 1960, at which point Currys badged bicycles may well have been made by raleigh. Currys allegedly continued to sell their own brand bikes until some time in the 1960s.
Currys were responsible for a 'strange but true' series (during WWII ?), which can be seen here

although I think #49 and #21 are missing
cheers
