Is it? With right foot down, and slightly back, isn't it easier to twist to look over your right shoulder?
It is easier to do it with left foot down because your weight naturally shifts towards the left when you look over your right shoulder.

Tested this out on the way to the pub last night, and it is indeed easier (at least with my position on a Brom) looking over the right with left foot down.
