Random notifications being sent

Post by CREPELLO »

I'm getting random notifications sent to my email. They're mainly from Bikes And Tech forum, but from threads I've never even read in some cases! Never mind threads that I've contributed to. They also show up in the notification area of the forum.
Any ideas what's happening? I've not been hacked, surely?

Trying to assist diagnosis. We need to discover whether you have somehow become subscribed to some random threads or this stuff is just turning up without any form of subscription?

Check in your user control panel for manage subscriptions and manage bookmarks.

Are there any entries? If so do they relate to threads you have received notifications on?

Thanks Gaz. Hopefully sorted now. I found the board pref tab, then the Edit Notification Options, which I failed to see before. Anyhow, somehow email notifications had got ticked for "Someone creates a topic in a forum to which you are subscribed ". How that happened, I haven't the foggiest, as I've never opened that tab before!

I've still yet to figure out why I can't use smilies, which are switched on in options under smilies. I shall try IE instead of Firefox.

So I've just discovered that smilies work on IE. Wonder why that is? Could it be to do with having "flash option" off?

Oh well, that didn't work. Despite email notifications being switched off and still showing off, I'm still getting email reports! I've now un checked every notification option. Hope that works.

Just to add that these notifications don't relate to any threads I'm following or even reading! They only come fro the Tech board.

I'm still getting random notifications from the Bike Tech section, despite unticking every notification option in the board preferences.

I've had a look in the database, and there some odd notification settings there. I've set all of them to "no notifications", so hopefully that'll fix the problem for you.

More or less the same problem over here, but a bit more sinister.

Yesterday I got an e-mail from: mbadmin@ctc.org.uk

New reply to the topic New route planner. Nothing strange, as I'm writing in this topic.

Clicking the link to the latest reaction:

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=83831&e=1&view=unread#unread

It end at the latest reaction, but it is one of myself.

When I look in the notifications, there is this:

But in the memberlist I don't see an Alexa222.

What's happening?

Alexa222 joined, commented on a few topics, then began spamming, so the account was deactivated, and posts deleted.

Oké. Thanks for the quick response.
It looked sinister, but it's clear now what happened.
