Debugging the avatar problem as we speak.

I think the avatars that are showing are those that your browser has cached and which haven't expired yet.

OK.
I'll quit Safari now, and delete all history and caches, and see.

Back soon! :D

Just was not sure if you thought it was ok after your post re: a caching issue (which initially made me wonder about it being a e-Tag config issue in Apache (.htaccess) on the new server. But latest version of Firefox has classed Live HTTP Headers as "legacy" and refuses to allow it to activate!

Yep.
History deleted, cookies deleted, and caches emptied.

All avatars gone, so looks like you were right.

Fixed (I think) :)

[Technical explanation: for some reason the phpBB configuration file has a closing PHP tag at the end. My new development environment automatically added a blank line at the end of the file, and this newline character was being appended to the beginning of the avatar image data. The images were corrupted by this extra byte, so browsers were unable to display them. I've now removed the obsolete and unwanted closing PHP tag so this won't happen again!]

For a few moments there I had Graham's avatar alongside every post, in addition to the user's own, if they had one.

I suspect your browser has cached the broken images.

You might be able to get them back by flushing your browser's files cache. Or right-click and "reload image" on each one individually, if your browser has that option.

The broken images will expire from the cache eventually, and the fixed images downloaded then.
