Intermittently slow forum

Post by Mick F »

Noticed an issue over the last week or so.
Sometimes - more often than not - the forum is lightning fast.
Other times - maybe one in ten? - it's slug-like and will take up to 30secs to load a page.

Nothing wrong with our connection or our WiFi.

Squirrels?
Reuse, recycle, thus do your bit to save the planet.... Get stuff at auctions, Dump, Charity Shops, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Car Boots. Choose an Old House, and a Banger ..... And cycle as often as you can......

I wonder if the forum is getting busier again after another forum seems to have upset a few people into quitting. The delays seem to appear more frequently on posting and a couple of times, page loads have simply timed out for me.

There were some nasty network problems last Friday, but those have been fixed. Is it still intermittently slow?

At a particular time of day?

At a particular time within each hour?

Randomly?

Yes, still slow, and then instant.
No rhyme or reason or regularity.

Is the system is being overloaded sometimes?
Thinking about it, sometimes when I try to log in, Safari says that the page doesn't exist or it can't be found.

It's the intermittency that is getting a bit stupid.
Sometimes and more often instantaneous, but sometimes slug-like.

It's been terrible for quite a few days. I've not bothered looking much as some of the delays have been horrendous.

Edit: This (original post) was quick, but for some 15 seconds would have been a joy.

No obvious overloads on the server. I have plenty of alarms that go off if it starts having to work hard.

Can you tell me more about the slow pages?

Are they always when you post a new comment, or also when you are just browsing and reading?

Piwik/Matomo says the average page generation time (including client-side rendering) is only 0.3 seconds or less.

I wonder where the problem is...

With me, browsing and reading is more often than not, instantaneous.
Posting, is often very slow or very very slow, but every now and again instantaneous.

Given the question, posting is slow, browsing is fast.
....... but it varies.
