I propose to include this in the FORUM Rules & Guidelines.

Over the past few years, certain users have gone a bit berzerk with their signatures. One case was eight lines ( maybe more ! )

Many users are now using devices with relatively small screens and these long Sigs are taking a disproportionate amount of screen space.
Your current signature will appear on all ALL of your posts - all the historic ones as well.

And frankly, the repetition of your clever and voluminous text can get a bit . . . . . . . um, challenging.

Until now I have approached this huge and serious problem** trivia on an ad hoc basis. However, it's seems to be becoming more frequent .

Alternatively go into User Control Panel > Board Preferences > Edit display options

and turn off Display signatures.

I like signatures, they can be enlightening or entertaining, +1
A few members make very long posts, before I have read the whole post I have forgotten who wrote it, maybe they could sign at the bottom so one doesnae have to scroll back up

Seems unnecessarily punitive when at least one line has to be used if you don't want Cycle magazine to steal your work.

And three lines on whose screen? What width?

Sounds like you're having an unhappy New Year. Hope it gets Happier!

Best default option would surely be for the Gazette editor to have to ask for permission before poaching our cleverness

I will trim mine up a bit, even reducing the text size, originally it's helped find my post when I was flipping through them.

I since added an avatar, now easy to spot
Two lines on a 17" and three something on iphone but its an old 4".......no ones got one of them have they

And of course if whoever it is at National Office that scours these boards for pearls of wisdom to regurgitate in Cycle has done that too, they won't see your warning.

Graham: the current limit is 255 characters (presumably plus spaces but I don't know if it includes BBcode). The designers of this forum software decided that was reasonable for the good working of the forum and were very generous on font size as well. I accept that may be too much for a smart phone but I've never come across a signature that is too long. In fact, it's time IMV that people added a bit more information without revealing their identity. Location, as in which country, might be a good start.

The less agreeable it is to read the less likely people are to blame CUK when they walk into lamp-posts.

That is not so bad, I think it could be tolerated, the information is often useful or interesting, but some signatures contain empty lines, or *** rows of characters, signifying nothing
Surely those could be edited to help those using small screens as noted above by Graham
