Why become a moderator?

There has been some discussion of moderation here, but I am wondering why people volunteer to do the job
I understand it is unpaid, is that right? Does one have a contract and set duties?

One has to make decisions that often displease others* Mind, one does have a lot of power and can remove or discourage texts one disagrees with

What are the rules for banning members? I understand the moderators have absolute power here, but I think very few are banned
..
I wondered about volunteering to be a moderator, but I have enough interests to keep me busy in retirement and I think I should find it aggravating, I should find myself taking my work home

Mind, we only have a couple of moderators, a few more might be desireable

Just a joke.
Sometimes to Moderate must be like trying to separate Killkenny Fighting Cats, almost certain to get scratched by one of them.
I've had my troubles with them, but on the whole they do an excellent job! Cut me some slack . MM

I have previously volunteered to be a moderator (in order to stop people putting up items for sale
without actual photographs of their sale items, or putting direct links to an ebay sale without details
on the for sale page of their item.

The response I received was (I'll paraprase:) If an individual is happy with the description, they'll buy the item.
