The Number 8

Post by Mick F »

Why can't I put the number 8 in brackets?

(8)

I'll have to do (8) instead.
( I switched italics on and off either side of the 8 )

Yes, that would work too. Thanks.

I shouldn't have to go to this trouble to just type a number in brackets!

One of the many reasons why smiley icons are evil :)

In MS Word you can't even put a 'c' in brackets - now this may not be important to many people but sometimes I need to indicate the party certain people represent and it's most convienient to use (L), (C) and (LD). I then look up at my document to find half the Members are apparently copyrighted!

As many as half? I thought (C) was dropping down the ratings now!

I have been thinking about brackets { yes, most of the time I do have better things to do - but I'm playing with a new keyboard and need to type summat to test it }, and it seems to me:

Round brackets like "()" make sense for handwriting: easy to draw. But if one is using a keyboard "[]" are actually better: They are more prominent amongst txt, and on most keyboards they are faster to type as they are not shifted chars.

So the simple solution is to use [ and ] all the time.

[ except when handwriting, but then you don't get the smiley or copyright problems anyway. ]

{ who has decideed that he likes using his new eee PC when he's feeling slightly poorly and doesn't want to get out of bed: it sits perfectly on the knee, and is neither too hot nor too heavy the way most laptops are. And it's inexpensive, and it doesn't have any Microsoft code in it. }

Hi Nick,
Poorly in bed eh?
Got the Man Flu?

Get well soon.

Like the idea of [[[[[]]]]]]'s. Makes sense.
Ta!

Sorted my "Fault" yet?

Regards,
Mick

Thank you for the 'get well' wishes - have to confess to a bit of malingering this morning: Daphne and I both had a very minor 36-hour flu-thing and I'm perfectly ok but enjoying putting off getting up and doing things for a short while. Won't last: the chickens are hungry !

And as to your query, yes it is sorted: it's definitely your fault ! [ 8) ].

rgds,

Nick

You can turn off all of Word's "helpful" auto-formatting. It's the first thing I do when faced with a fresh installation of it :)
