Software Update > Missing Avatars > Is it just me?

Post by gaz »

A number of Avtars aren't displaying; in the following thread I can't see meic's, tigger's or swallow's. They appear as "X User Avatar", the link to the espective user profiles are working.

http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=65933

This should display meic's Image but I just get "X Image"

Mine's fine.

Any connection to http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=65929 ?

I can still see the emoticons, most of them just look different.

But a number of the Avatars aren't there, of course in some cases this could be considered an improvement.

Your accents are missing as well. Perhaps it doesn't show Welsh accents.

Presumably you are using IE to have the red x instead of an image. The text you are seeing is what's know as an "alt" tag.

That's a strange problem as you can see your image (jpg format). But not some others in .jpg. Also meic used the .gif format and that's not working yet avatars are.

If you want a hand fixing it I might need to know a bit more info, such as what browser/version you are using.

A fix may be possible by clearing your cache. Otherwise could be the way PHPBB is built that your version of IE reads it incorrectly.

Déjà vu. Yes I can confirm that it's only the Welsh edition of the board that's suffering from missing accents.

Yes I'm using IE, but an experimental switch to Firefox alos fails to display these Avatars.

Alex L wrote:That's a strange problem

Most of my problems fall into that category.

Windos XP, SP3, IE8. Firefox was on 3.6 (not too worried I hardly ever use it) but I've now upgraded to 13.0 and the problem persists.

I tend to shy away from weblinks offering to clear my cash. IE8 is set to auto-clear cache at end of each browsing session, double checked and run the deletion sequence, rebooted, problem is still there.

PS I can no longer see your Avatar or TCs

I logged off a few minutes ago and back came on as a lurker.
The same avatars that I couldn't see as Mick F, were the same ones missing as a lurker.

Therefore, if your avatar's missing, it's missing.

Hmm, attempting to connect to the URL addresses of the Avatars I cannot see retruns a "Web page cannot be displayed" HTTP 404 Error.

It's just a guess but it seems to me that it's the more recently uploaded Avatars that aren't displaying. TC and meic may have been on the boards for a long, long time but their current Avatars have not.

Whatever the cause it is most vexatious.

Just checked, I presume it to be related to the thread you linked to and we just have to wait for a fix.

Browsing incognito I cannot see all avatars, however I can see them when logged in. It may be possible if we re-upload our avatars for the problem to be fixed.

We'll see what the admins say in a few days if problems persist.

I can see Mick F's. See, you don't work purely out of the goodness of your heart. You get priority avatars

I'm pleased to hear it. Whilst my techno-geek levels are low I suspect this means that users own Avatar's are cached.

So far I'm unable to restore any of the missing Avatars at my end, I suspect they have fallen victim to the latest forum "update". :(

Since my Avatar is still riding along nicely I'll let him be.

Apologies, it appears that some avatar images were accidentally deleted in the recent Forum update work... I'll see if I can find backup copies, otherwise please feel free to re-upload your avatar, which will then appear on all your posts.
