spell checker

Post by Si »

would it be loads of trouble to add a spell checker to the forum, for those among us who lack a certain ability when it comes to the English language?

Using Mozilla Firefox as my browser, it comes with a spell-check facility built in. If it doesn't like a word, it underlines it in red.

Trouble is, it doesn't tell you HOW it should be spelt, just that it's wrong!

On my copy of Firefox (2.0.0.7 on Windows XP Pro):
  1. Right-click the underlined word;
  2. Choose from the shortcut menu!

However, it doesn't tell you if the word is correctly spelled but not the one you meant!

Si: Can you install a second browser? You don't need to make it the default and you can set up a shortcut to "firefox http://forum.ctc.org.uk" (pm me if you need help to do this).

oh, I'll try that! Not that there is a "Right Click" on an AppleMac.

It appears that you press "ctrl" and click to get the menu.

Cheers! I can teach this thing!

In theory I could but in practise it plays merry hell with my work software (it likes grabbing any browser that it currentoy active, at any time, and when it finds the plug-ins missing things go to hell in a hand basket). Might give it another go when I get a new, non-steam driven, machine!

Wow!

You have the US English dictionary installed! The British English spelling is "diarrhoea". Hoping the Mac version is similar to the Windows and Linux ones:
  1. From the Tools menu of Firefox, click Add-ons.
  2. At the bottom of the Add-ons dialog box, click Get Extensions. Firefox opens an extensions catalogue in a new tab.
  3. In the left-hand panel, click Dictionaries.
  4. Scroll down to the entry for English (British), then click Install.

Thanks Geoff,

Yes, I knew it was spelt wrongly, but not how it was spelt! I just thought of difficult words, and those came out!

I must teach this thing ..... I didn't know it could be taught before!

There seems to be one phpBB spell checker add-on, but it seems to use US English...

I'll see what else I can find.

No, sorry. I could possibly write one, but funding for the forum is pretty limited.

Using the Firefox web browser is an alternative (it checks spelling as you type, a bit like MS Word), and if you install Opera's spell checker you can spell check your posts in that browser too. There are various spell checkers for Internet Explorer too, but I don't know how well they work.

I have Google Tool Bar installed http://toolbar.google.com/T4/intl/en-GB/index.html There's a spell checker and lots of other handy tools (including a pop up blocker).
