Bill Tilman.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Tilman

Amongst many other trips he cycled across Africa in the Thirties.
Fought in both World Wars with distinction.
Led Everest expeditions and reconnoitred the eventual successful route.
Found the route into the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
Made many first ascents in remote ranges.
Sailed to cold places including Greenland and Antarctica to climb.

It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT ROLE MODELS ARE !!!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO DRESS UP LIKE THEM, OR CHANGE YOUR NAME BY DEED POLL, OR GET PLASTIC SURGERY!!!

Sorry, I feel better now ...

Yeh but no but yeh but ..... many do become fans of the emulating ilk, dressing, speaking, behaving (badly) just as their idols do. I have seen cyclists pretending they are that Wiggo or even Cav, for example. Then there are all the hooligans copying the arch-hooligan. And the clubs of fellows egging each other on to perform many strange, dangerous or anti-social rituals beloved of their club. And let us not forget the fashion victims, of every ilk & tittle.

The drivers of cars who copy the loon-antics of others they admire with a heavy foot ......

I'm with oldJ - I prefer to arrange my own act, even though the odd notion or behaviour of some other fellow might serve as a prompt. I don't want their clarty boots though! When I stride out on the stage of life, the audience will comment, "Gaw, I've never seen THAT before".

***
As to being a role model .... My daughters tell me that I was, sort of. They considered my antics and at least knew what not to do.

Cugel

PS Who do you copy i' the behaviourals then? And why, why?

Santana, the guitarist, and Elton John, surely the Godfather of British music.

I enjoyed Caravanserai and also CS's twanging on that John Lee Hooker track "The Healer". But it does end up as the same few twangs on everything, eh?

Does Elton John do music? I thought it was just a bit of moaning & shouting with accompanying piano-hammering.

Does no one listen to real music on Radio 3 these days? You know, stuff beyond chord 3. :-)

Bill Tilman. Yes indeed. I have all his books and they are inspirational. Every time I read them I'm tempted to buy a boat and sail to Greenland.

The 3 Peaks Yacht race was founded in his honour. We did it one year as the running part of the team; never met the great man though.

Yes. We do. Wake up every morning to Petroc Trelawney. Some good stuff on there and not all heavy orchestral music.

We used to wake up to the Today programme but ditched that a couple of years ago to get away from politicians and Brexit. Won't be going back!!!
