Bert Trautmann made a great contribution to international understanding, he was a German goalie who took the Etihad Shilling soon after ww2, a film of his life appears soon

Any suggestions for an alternative term to 'Role Model'?

I like the Joss as a fell runner and as a sporty lad who doesn't sucumb to prima-donna seleb mode. However, this doesn't make him "my hero" as who knows what else he gets up to? Perhaps he votes Tory and runs after cyclists to tell them off for riding on the bridleways? Or worse (although little is worse than voting Tory). :-)

It's a modern thing to confuse good actions with good "personalities". Good actions are to be admired, praised and referenced as exemplary. But "good personalities" may easily exude some bad person habits, whether one hasn't heard of them or whether they are yet to manifest. All of us are awful sinners, ripe for the sinning and very lucky if we've not given in to the various temptations to be "all too human".

To make a hero of someone, rather than some of their particular actions, is to suspend judgement about their other actions. Many end up as fans, excusing the most outrageous acts as the actor is "my hero".

Jacinda Ardern, pm of nz, is very popular and admired right now but her star will sink sooner or later

What do retired politicians do?

Neil Armstrong. One of the best stick and rudder men that ever lived, but modest and understated to a painful degree. I'll never have his character, but if I had to choose a decent human being to emulate then it would be him.

I agree, contrast her with the poor excuse the UK has for PM and it's easy to see why the UK is in the mess it is.

Definitely a pragmatist, too far ahead of his time.

Hi Cyril Haearn, I'd only use Bercow as a role model if I was after the job of "Village Idiot"! Pass him the Motley  . MM

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT ROLE MODELS ARE !!!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO DRESS UP LIKE THEM, OR CHANGE YOUR NAME BY DEED POLL, OR GET PLASTIC SURGERY!!!

Sorry, I feel better now ...
