Thread resurrection alert

Just had to remove Tiger Woods from my list of American sporting role models. He crashed his vehicle while doing nearly twice the maximum speed limit

The police do not plan to bring charges!

An almost forgotten American cyclist who did not win the tour de France seven times springs to mind, may his sins be forgiven?

"Role model: who is yours?"

Impossible not to reply, MYSELF

I've still to better that 45 mile round, daily weekend bike ride, c/w a 2455' climb, to do a 10' hour day in a physically demanding weekend job, for two years as a 15-16 year old! But to be fair, I was paid nearly £10.00 a day

I remember reading a story about pro riders out on a training ride in continental Europe and when stopping one drunk huge number of double espressos as a bet. I think it something like 14 before he stopped.

I think it may have been either Floyd Landis or Tyler Hamilton, neither were strangers to stimulant use(!), but 14 double espressos - that's a role model!

I’ve always considered myself a maverick and I’ve never had a role model. I deal with life and it’s situations my own way by just muddling along learning (usually but not always) by my own little successes and bigger mistakes.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Noam Chomsky: an anti-american, pro-palestinian, american jew of exceptional erudition, knowledge and fortitude who is still ruffling feathers aged 92. And people are finally beginning to listen

My mother told me once that she knew & admired him. It must have been in the 1950s, but she never gave me any details.

I don’t think he’s almost forgotten at all. He’s in the cycling press as much now as he was when racing!
As for forgetting his sins well it’s debatable as to whether he committed any or not.
