Re: Favourite quotations
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Remembrance of childhood:
"I met a man upon a stair
but when I looked he wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today
oh how I wish he'd go away."

...reminded me of this:
I do not like thee, Doctor Fell,
The reason why - I cannot tell;
But this I know, and know full well,
I do not like thee, Doctor Fell.

Yes. It's surprising where you can get snippets of good advice. I like some of the more intelligent bands that came out of punk they can have decent lyrics when you actually listen.

Re: Favourite quotations
Just found this, so "favourite" is pushing it a bit, but it's great:
Smooth down the Avenue glitters the bicycle,
Black-stockinged legs under navy blue serge,
Home and Colonial, Star, International,
Balancing bicycle leant on the verge.
- John Betjeman, "Myfanwy".

In the light of Ukip's inflammatory anti immigration poster :
Fascism was an explosion against intolerable conditions, against remediable wrongs which the old world failed to remedy. It was a movement to secure national renaissance by people who felt themselves threatened with decline into decadence and death and were determined to live, and live greatly.
Oswald Mosley

The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you're someone. You hear them shouting "Heil, Spode!" and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer. What the Voice of the People is saying is: "Look at that frightful ass Spode swanking about in footer bags! Did you ever in your puff see such a perfect perisher?"

Quotations / advice given to me by my late father:
When you go out on the ale, always wear leather shoes. (My first drinking session ended in me being sick all over my suede shoes, leather shoes are much easier to clean)
Never argue with an idiot, agree with them and they have lost their argument.
When leaving a company, if you think the firm or your boss were the worst in the world, don't say so, at best, you will need a reference and at worst, you may want to go back to work there.
Always smile even if you are really feeling down, it confuses people.

Brilliant.
People snigger and laugh at me every day,due to my appearance.
Now I laugh with them and it puzzles them
Re: Favourite quotations
"I didn't know he was alive until he was dead" - uttered by Ciarán Hinds playing J. Caesar Esq. in the Beeb's Rome serial. Now that the obits of boomer pop musicians are popping up in the paper with dull regularity I'm finding it increasingly appropriate.
"Never whistle while you're micturating" - Hagbard Celine, who used another word entirely.
"Keep your mind on the job" - my father, frequently, to me, but not in the above circumstances - usually when washing the dishes. Incidentally, the sinks in the Maginot Line kitchens were set about a foot above fly-button level.

Re: Favourite quotations
Has anyone mentioned the late, great Yogi Berra? Nearly anything he ever said must be someone's favourite. "When you come to a fork in the road, take it", for instance. Some of them kind of make sense, though, for instance "it ain't over, till it's over".

Re: Favourite quotations
Sleepe after toyle, port after stormie seas,
Ease after warre, death after life does greatly please.
from The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser. Epitaph of Joseph Conrad.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?
