Favourite quotations

Post by ncutler »

Just came across this and thought it might be worth sharing:

"When you are Dead, you don't know you are Dead. It is difficult only for others.
It is the same when you are stupid."

After the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box.

Mine is the death and taxes quote. I won't type it out as I'll end up not getting the quote exactly right. No idea why I like it but I do.

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

I have this one somewhat on my mind, since I took up playing bridge again a few months ago, after a lapse of many decades.

Online bridge, at any rate, is full of pompous characters who think they're world-class players - when they're not. A bit like some cycling forums....

So: this piece of wisdom, which comes, apparently from Anton Chekhov (I didn't know that!):

"Only fools and charlatans know everything and understand nothing."
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.
Let us pass the time by performing physical experiments...
--- Arthur Eddington (creator of the Eddington Number).

^^^Like the Scots proverb, "fools and bairns should never see half-done work".

“Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you do criticise him, you'll be a mile away and have his shoes.”

and

"Don't take down a wall before you know why it was built." (That's one for modernisers, reformers and revolutionaries everywhere - and interior designers.)

I can not remember who said "If it made any difference they would not let us vote".

Seems vary apt at the moment.

3 economists were discussing Brexit
One said the £ will fall
Another said there will be mass unemployment
the third said. God! I'll lose my job
