I think I read this some decades ago in The New Cyclist edited by Jim McGurn. Anyway, it has stuck from somewhere.

Kinda ties in with something Thatcher said: "A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure."

Heaven knows what she must have thought of cyclists.

Mind you, I should have applied for my bus pass (in Scotland) three years ago and haven't yet, maybe because, as a cyclist who doesn't run a car and cycles for transport, if I found myself on a bus I'd tend to count myself as a failure (or a lazy git).

If there was evidence for it we'd hear about it as often as we hear about `No such thing as society' - an accurate quote, though taken out of context. How about 'Crisis - what crisis'...

I suppose it is like all those which are wrongly attributed to Churchill or Oscar Wilde. They are widely thought to be the sort of quip they would make.

Oh well, I didn't know that but I suppose it shouldn't surprise me. Funny thing is, I've always 'heard' it in Thatcher's voice!

It was Callaghan, though of course he didn't. On returning fron a trip to Africa he was asked about the crisis of the Winter of Discontent to which he replied, 'l don't think other people in the world would think this is a crisis' - and l guess from what he'd just seen in Africa was possibly true. But it helped to lead to his downfall.
