Where were you in '73
Something just got me thinking about days gone by, 1973 actually, I had
left Sussex to spend the Summer in Cornwall living in my VW bus and surfing my brains out. Oh yeah girls and drinking but mainly surfing. I had been riding about 5 years prior to this but push bikes were not in my life although a die had been cast, how I came back to cycling is strange.
So where were you in '73?

I was 17 years old in 1973 and was on the dole in April until July. These pics were taken in 1974 & 75, first outside the pub (notice the Smoke Room on the window) and the second when I was the best man for my mate. He got a divorce in 1977 and I sadly don't have the hair now
I got my first bike in 1974 from Halfords for £34. I will post a pic when I find the neg.

I was coming to terms with married life and a daughter(born in '72).the marriage didn't last but I had the rare opportunity of going to court and getting custody of said daughter(now 35 and about to get married herself).
I had a Suzuki T500K motor bike,oh, and please don't laugh, I owned a Reliant van (yes, like Del boy's,I could drive it on my motorcycle licence).
Cycling wasn't figuring much at that moment in time,I came back to it later.
PS No photos its embaressing enough to admit to owning a Reliant!

At secondary school preparing for O'levels. Riding an orange Carlton Continental with green mudguards in platform shoes was difficult but reaching the ground was a doddle. You could wrap baggy trousers round your leg three times before putting yer bicycle clips on. Herringbone fabric bar tape and 5 (count 'em) speeds.
I chopped it in for a moped a couple of years later like a mug but it wasn't long before I was back on a bike.

My elder son is in the pram, being pushed by the proudest dad in the land (then aged 28.) He was just a few days old when this was taken. Dad is now even prouder because son is a chartered accountant
(That pic is the nearest I've ever been to wearing the yellow jersey.)
