Baxter Dury’s Night Chancers album. I’m a big fan of Baxter and this albums a cracker. Was also a big fan of his dad back in the day.

I'd never have heard of Mary Gauthier, or her alcoholic's lament 'I drink' without Bob Dylan's Theme Time Shows, a live version here, a great song.

I taped loads of them at the time off of Radio 2, and subsequently bought C.D's with the tracks off of the show, not the same without B.D's between song droll patter tho'!

Taped them, eh? Was it really that long ago! I s'pose it was... as you say, we end up hearing stuff that otherwise would have passed us by. I got excited when I heard that Iggy Pop was going to do a show on R6 - I hoped it might be as good as TTRH, but come the day, I didn't think so.
I've been trying to find 'back copies' of some of John Peel's radio shows - I didn't get them back in the day, but I think I might now!

2006-2009, I'd still be listening to cassettes if all me players hadn't packed up. Dig that crazy wow and flutter man.
I recall a lot of the Peel sessions were released on vinyl at one time, not quite the same without His Master's Voice though.
Funnily enough I got Iggy's 'Raw Power' on cassette and found it too hard going for me and got rid.The same with David Bowie's Aladdin Sane, I couldn't get on with all that Mike Garson dissonant tinkling piano on it, too 'out there' for me at the time, I listen to it now and the piano's my favourite thing on it! Perhaps I should give Raw Power a second chance sometime as well.

You might like this if you liked JP's programmes, and whilst on the subject of home taping, energy!

I am increasingly aware of just how much of "my life's soundtrack" includes music I first heard on the John Peel Show after bedtime through a single, mono earpiece which was plugged into my transistor radio. Artists included, for example: Ivor Cutler, Tyrannosarus Rex,
Anne Briggs and Pink Floyd. That show was to form an enduring influence on my musical preferences.
I now choose to listen often to Radio6 which regularly features excerpts from JP sessions on shows hosted by Gideon Coe and others but which also introduce me to contemporary artists who I can follow up and find out about so easily these days. And I do.
The single earpiece remains... for late night listening to radio, internet or record player without disturbance to others!
