It's all about self interest.
They support it because they believe it'll be better for them, no other reason. Once they realise otherwise it's too late.
Perhaps some Leavers do work up a bit of logic, flawed or otherwise, as to why leaving the EU is in their interest. However, there does seem a large element of voting Leave because it would be
against the interests of The Others.
Such Others are many and varied, from foreigners-in-general (including Bulgarians, apparently) to those with the "wrong" skin tone. There are also many imaginary Others, such as the conspirators plotting to press all Blighters into the EU army, where they will be made to wave the wrong flag and goose-step about. There are also Evil Bureaucrats who make terrible laws to promote the interests of the undeserving poor instead of allowing a Big Tory to persecute them in good old Little England fashion.
