** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'
Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'
Pete, its people and companies who decide on trade, not Superstates. Deciders are the spec, quality, availability and cost amongst others. I dont think you understand trade? A free trade deal will be the result and that wont have a massive effect on our EU trade. But...increased trade with non EU countries will more than compensate for any shortfall. Brexit promises a better future unfettered by the EU. Its what people voted for and why the Tories got an 80 seat majority to ensure that it happens.

To quote yourself back at yourself!
"Unfettered" is in this context quite without meaning.
We are all fettered mostly by big and undemocratic interests.
Did you see our new Defence Secretary says we should all fly more?
He's worried, matey.
And Boeing's up the chute so European Airbus will boom. Shame Broughton voted leave.

AL it's states who decide import duties, tariffs and standards that products have to meet to be sold in their markets.
The biggest Superstate in the world is the USA which looks likely to have a very great influence on UK trade post Brexit.
If other countries are not buying Britain's products now why will they suddenly start doing so after Brexit?
What products does Britain actually produce? For example the car industry is largely an EU one. Mini German, Bentley German, Rolls Royce German, Nissan effectively French, Vauxhall French. That leaves Landrover and Jaguar which are Indian and Toyota which is Japanese. In other words none of them have any commitment to this country.
Well under 50% of the electorate voted for the Tories yet all the Tories can ensure is that we leave the EU. They haven't the power to make anything else you describe happen. There's little sign so far of them arranging any trade deals and they'll have to try hard to get the same trade deals we now enjoy as EU members. Contrary to what you fondly imagine the rest of the world doesn't owe Britain a living.
Your views seem to be wishful thinking.

You're out of your depth I'm afraid, best make your way to the shallow end - and to be clear governments with FTAs do not necessarily abandon all control of imports or exports, or eliminate protectionist policies. In reality few FTAs result in completely free trade.
People voted for a better future - they bought into a lie.

al_yrpal wrote:So what? They dont want to loose that 10%, and trade wont stop, our economies are closely intertwined. The EU will sign up by the end of this year on terms very close to how things are now, its in the EUs interests. Its companies and people that determine business not trade blocs. Obviously all this stuff is outside your experience.

"So what"?
So we need them far more than they need us, the precise opposite of your claim.

The number of economists who believe this is almost zero.
As for what people voted for, sure - but it's not what they're going to get. Read the withdrawal agreement.

We'll see! The 'experts' have a pretty poor record over the last few years. And, you seem to think we will just sit there like a rabbit in the headlights. People adapt...

The analogy is cycling into a headwind. Can you adapt? Somewhat. Will it always be harder than a calm day? Yes.

Adaption is all about making the best of a situation, doesn't guarantee the situation will be better.
"like a rabbit in the headlights", pretty much sums up our government over the last 4 years.

But hey we've got different coloured passports so an excellent deal!
Nope, they're still issuing red ones because they can't even afford to junk that much card! And we could have remained in the EU and issued blue passports like Croatia does (and Ireland's are green) so this is another way Leave Means Lies.

Yes, been a pretty good investment over the last 12 months. Should do better with the Brexit bounce!

Clever but shortsighted!

Indeed.
And not just in the UK, the planet is quite small really!
Although ideally land really shouldn't be seen as mere monetary investment for absentee corporate owners, but that's something of a ship long sailed.
Interestingly (or not?) the Govt is to put soil conservation high on it's subsidy agenda it seems.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51128709
(The soil being equally owned in the UK of course!)
But the EU had been one step ahead with big landowner Rees Mogg's detested 3 crop rule.
Which was broadly about soil conservation.
Makes you think? (Or not)
Why bother leaving?
