I have this many years. And is a book to be dipped into as it is mainly maps of the peoples/cities/plaques/trade/christianity of Europe and the near east and north Africa from abut AD 400 to AD 1500. It is a fascinating book with the names of tribes and peoples Ibet many have never heard of and their migrations eg the Khanate of the Golden Horde - now that name makes your eyes boggle? I must have had this paper back 20 years or so

not that expensive and worth getting to get a look at how busy Europe & beyond has been over AD 400 to AD1500.

I have a close relative of that - starts in pre-Roman times and ends (I think) in the 19th century. The sort of thing you can browse in for 5 minutes and find that half an hour has passed.

Meanwhile, I'm reading Dan Simmons' The Abominable with Edward Whymper's The Ascent of the Matterhorn on the side for reference. You can get the Whymper for nowt on Gutenberg.org: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/38044. It not only recounts the first ascent but tells you all about 19th century climbing kit and a deadly manilla rope.

Currently reading the K-PAX trilogy of books by Gene Brewer.A quite thought provoking read.

Brilliant books. Film is excellent as well (does not spoil the books as films can do sometimes).

Got the trilogy (in a single book) but not started on it. Family "challenges" stopped me reading anything much for the last few months (still half way through Convergence from the same author).

Agreed about the books,unfortunately I can't remember much about the film other than I enjoyed it(must be my age )

Been looking for books by Amos Oz for a while, found a copy of 'Stories from Tel Ilal', just read the first story, +1!

I am currently reading Arnhem by Anthony Beevor, why ? Because a relative of mine was a paratrooper in Operation Market Garden, captured by the Germans and spent until April '45 as a PoW.

Beevor is one of our finest historians.

I am also reading Edward Thomas's poetry.

Had a sister in law who died of it a year ago. As we get older not a bad idea to have some understanding of it?
