Moon.
250,000 miles.

Sun.
93,000,000 miles.

Alpha Centaur
4.37 light years.

I reckon I could put a sign up to this effect, take a photo of it, and wipe the floor with this thread.

Come on, give us a real road sign ........... preferably in UK.

Quite. All you need to do is take pictures on the Solar System cycle path south of York. The whole point of the thread is surely about distances on real road signs.

Distances for wimps. Let's have a real astronomical distance. How about:
GN-z11 - 130,557,660,000,000,000,000,000 Km (approx.)
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.
Let us pass the time by performing physical experiments...

I supplied several real roadsigns before digressing with the pole, NZ and then the million miles...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Yes, I know, and good ones too. :D

I would still like to see a UK one, even though the OP title doesn't state UK.

As a general rule, modern traffic signs on trunk roads don't show distances at all. The former West Riding County Council used to have a comprehensive system of finger signposts showing distances and topped with a ring with the OS grid reference. Some do survive. The WRCC, in common with many other authorities had accurate mile markers on main roads. these had two vertical faces at right angles to each other so each was at 45degs to the road, and with a list of destinations and distances. Local info at the top. Encouragement for a rider making good progress, just one more discouragement when struggling into a headwind. Most are long gone. "When I was a lad, those at the Great North Road at Wetherby had London 200m on one side and Edinburg 200m on the other, with a list of other intermediate destinations. An awful lot of places on the old A1 began with B: Berwick, Boroughbridge, Bawtry, Baldock and Biggleswade, with no other claim to fame (Except for Berwick-on-Tweed - something to do with still being at war with the Kaiser. )

Depends how you measure distance.

How about the Tombouctou 50 jours on the edge of the Sahara in Morocco?

I don't have a photo (or not one to hand) but twenty years ago you could cycle into a small French town and you'd see a sign to two other local towns saying 'Ville A 8km' and 'Ville B 13km' and then underneath a sign saying 'Paris 286km' or similarly large distance. It seemed so incongruent that I did take a photo, in the days of roll film, like this once.

I think it was probably because at some point some Maire has decided he (or she) should relate their town to Paris, even if it was a long way away and not even on a direct road, but that's only a theory. It would be like seeing a single sign in Darlington town centre saying 'London 250 miles'.

It's not as per the specifications ............. therefore it's an old sign probably left there, and there's a modern one nearby.

I think mine is the longest cumulative standard road sign in the UK.

................. unless you lot know different!

Sorry, Mick, but it's an entirely legitimate UK road sign and therefore defeats your paltry mileage. Nice try, though :)

And ta for the reminder - it was UK-specific.
