so who needs a tv licence? Today I picked up for a measley £3 from CEX the BBC series Planet Earth. Not dvd but Blue Ray, in mint condition. 5 discs. Any one seen this series want to give an opinion about it? The other month I picked up another Natural History blue ray set on Yellow Stone through the seasons for just a few £ also. That is a nice set with some stunning scenery

An olde fillum, but it's on TV tonight so worth a mention.

Cop Land. Stallone proves he can act, with arguably the performance of his life. Decent plot with some good twists, and stellar performances from Harvey Keitel, DeNiro, and Ray Liotta in particular. Again, Liotta isn't playing a Mafia hardman for a change and shines as the alcoholic bent cop struggling with his conscience.

I give this a 4.5 cans of Guinness rating, 4.7 if you count the cheese doritos.

'The Boys From Brazil' (1978) starring Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, James Mason and Steve Guttenberg

I liked this film 'back in the day' but probably last saw it about 30 years ago. It certainly doesn't pop up on British TV that often but did just that last week. Gregory Peck is right up there as one of my favourite actors of all time and it's great to see him in nasty mode as the odious Dr. Josef Mengele but it will surprise no one that Olivier steals every scene he is in. I won't go over the plot as I'm sure you are all too familiar with it but it was good to see this again. 7/10.

Thanks for that. Spent a pleasant hour this morning watching this. Honour Blackman, Thora Hird, and a young Diana Dors? Wakeford Wheelers. Back to the halcyon days of cycling.

'The Natural' (1984) starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger and Robert Duvall.

I'm really not a fan of American sports but must admit to loving the baseball-themed 'A League of their Own' and 'Field of Dreams'. This isn't quite as good but it does draw you in right at the start. Anyway, we see Redford all scrubbed up as a very young man on his way to becoming a successful baseball pitcher but he goes and gets himself shot. Then, on the verge of middle-age, he seemingly comes from nowhere to join a struggling team and begins to blast his way to a belated stardom as a batter but dark forces try to hold him back. Redford is superb but after a very good start the fairy tale becomes a bit too unnatural for my liking but it's still a good yarn. 7/10.

Not a film but a classic TV series called Battlestar Galactica. Not the original kiddies version but the remake of 2003

A short time ago I acquired the blu-ray discs so was eager to see this famous tv series in higher quality than dvd. I wasnt disappointed. The 4 season series is superb and a true classic belonging to the golden age of tv. Not so much about the future but the prehistory of mankind, I almost wonder if the idea was inspired by Erich von Däniken's ideas on the origins of hman culture such as explained in Chariots of the Gods. His books may be rubbish & pseudo history but atleast as exemplified by this tv series is a wonderful well acted and riviting bit of storytelling with fantastic effects that put Star Trek to shame

Loved it, although initially I was worried that they'd copped out and made the cylons humanoid to save money...

Haven't rewatched it though so don't know if it's stood the test of time.
(I want to rewatch Babylon 5 which was something else I loved but I'm afraid it isn't going to stand a rewatch).

The human cylons were intrinsic to the whole series not a cheap copout, posing the question what is it to be alive and we see the humans grapple with that question throughout, in fact the series depends on them. I am not normaly interested in clever-dick scifi but it is done so well. The drama is riveting. It is probably even better now since it was more sophisticated & better acted than any thing around at the time and therefore not fully appreciated, it escaped the repulsive geek Trekie Fandom of Star Trek with the pointy ears and throw away gestures and phrases ( beam me up scotty)? The whole issue of AI is so much a current worry that was just scifi then? Rather prophetic. The last season gets a bit mystical but atleast has a proper & unexpected ending. If you have the chance view it again, you could probably get DVDs of the series for not much money from CEX if you live in the UK. I bought my blu-ray set new for just £18 off ebay eg
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Battlestar-G ... Sw32lcXZSb

I want to get the blu- rays of Babylon 5 before I rewatch that. Could be a bit expensive though. I do have the dvds but the video quality is rather poor.

may not happen though

'Bitter Lake' (2015) written and directed by Adam Curtis.

A chaotic montage of newsreel and archive clips from various sources that combine to form a powerful documentary film explaining why our politicians in the West have failed to understand the Islamic world and have therefore simplified international friction into stories of good v. evil. Whilst centred on Afghanistan it does explore the bigger picture of regional politics (including the involvement of Saudi Arabia) and also global politics and the US banking structure. As the film passes '9-11' we suddenly get a British perspective on our increasingly confused role in Afghanistan with a powerful summary by a British Army Captain who served in Helmand Province. The newsreel and archive clips (bizarrely including 'Carry on up the Khyber' and Blue Peter) are mainly shown in a chronological order and are supported by a good soundtrack and narration by director Adam Curtis. It's all really quite hypnotic but ultimately depressing because you just know we're going to go through it all over again....

Exclusive to BBC iPlayer. 9/10.
