Big Brother BBC

Post by blackbike »

The BBC, long know for snooping on innocent people and boasting of its sinister database now has plans to tell your boss, your school, your ISP etc if it thinks you have said something 'objectionable' on its website.

Presumably this means it will pay staff to find out where you work or go to school.

Big Brother BBC.

It never bothered contacting the police when rumours of child sex abuse were swirling around its premises.

there is another more insidious thing. We all know that Windows 8.1/10 now has location capability as they are also built for Windows phones that have gps or other location capability: now some sites including the BBC are asking if they can know your location pesumably. We all need to turn this off in a desk top pc?

Well, I hardly think that one of the Murdoch rags is likely to give an unbiased account of anything it deems to be derogatory to its arch-rival the Beeb. Nor, it seems, is the Daily Fail which also appears to have picked up on this 'story'.

As to the BBC's privacy policy, what it actually says is this:
9. Offensive or inappropriate content on BBC websites

If you post or send offensive, inappropriate or objectionable content anywhere on or to BBC websites or otherwise engage in any disruptive behaviour on any BBC service, the BBC may use your personal information to stop such behaviour.

Where the BBC reasonably believes that you are or may be in breach of any applicable laws (e.g. because content you have posted may be defamatory), the BBC may use your personal information to inform relevant third parties such as your employer, school email/internet provider or law enforcement agencies about the content and your behaviour.

So what's so difficult about that? Don't internet forums, such as this one, have a similar policy? Isn't this a Good Thing, to keep trolls from spreading their vile effluent around?

Oh ----- wait!

I am not computer savvy enough to know the mechanics of what is possible or feasible for the BBC to do in either the real world or the Sun's version of it.

The BBC link is about information that you have provided to the BBC, which you would imagine either a Troll or a person who considers the BBC snoopers would not do in the first place. If they have given it then it is hardly snooping.

The Sun report is hoping to raise fears that the BBC can find you Big Brother style and tell your employers etc all about you.
Is this feasible? Would the ISP provide the BBC with your identity/location or can the BBC work it out for themselves? I would have thought not.
If the Police want to talk to you about what you have done, then I imagine the ISP will tell them who was using an IP address at any one time but that is hardly the BBC snooping.

Sometimes I think the words "The Sun" and "News" should not be used in the same sentence together....
