Hoppocalypse
(from apocalypse?)
A plague of kangaroos in Canberra, they are short of food cos there is a drought (is it summer down there too? ) In town they find plenty of juicy vegetation on sports fields and in gardens
The authorities issued some tips: keep dogs on leads
When driving, take a passenger if possible and instruct them to look out for roos

There are plenty of others, all over the world - some of them better known than others.Cyril Haearn wrote:Denaliist*

I remember being a bit mesmerised, some 30 years ago, when "Peking" became "Beijing". Few people would dare to use the old spelling now, except when referring to Peking Duck perhaps. And I know that "Beijing" more accurately reflects the Mandarin ("Putonghua"?) pronunciation, than the old Wade-Giles romanisation which was extremely confusing for non-academics! Perhaps this isn't really an example of 'denaliism' seeing as it's just an attempt to rationalise the pronunciation.
But there are many other well-known examples where a local name has been officially substituted: e.g. Myanmar for Burma, Mumbai for Bombay, Uluru for Ayers Rock. Once again, since these are officially sanctioned, I think calling it 'denaliism' is unfair.
It took me years before I learnt how to pronounce Baile Átha Cliath correctly. In fact I've probably still not got it right.....

Re: New words/vocab on these fora
Often both are right or valid, some places have three or more names, maybe the "real name" should be put first
Prize question: which two names apply to "Stroke City"?

I was supposed to get some title deeds for a house back from Santander. They cannot send them back to me as they have been dematerialised. Mebbe a Spanish thing?

That is a croppie, as such an application of the brake results in what I now call "doing a brucey".
This is not after Brucey's own style (his brakes work poorly to avoid the skid and similar) but rather after his description of the procedure whereby good brakes stop far too well for the good of the cyclist applying them, so they fall off in an undignified fashion as the tyre loses grip. the balance goes and the road bites (if you're lucky - car-bite is also a possibility).
