Hi again Cyril Haearn , The "Mersey Trout" is almost extinct these days.
The building of a massive water treatment plant at Sandon Dock did for them! They were brown in colour, sometimes pale, sometimes very dark.
Their density also varied, from rock hard through to very soft, almost slurry like.
They always floated on the surface, drifting with the tide.
We'd be heard singing - "Stools out for summer", la la la! Enough of my lavatorial humour. Just going to the tree that is often watered, but never grows? The Lavatry, schoolboy humour. TTFN MM

In Brighton and surrounding area (where there were 'raw' outfalls aplenty) I think they were called "brown admirals".

It's many years since I last went swimming in the sea at Brighton......

There's a quietly mentioned migratory fish run up the Mersey in the last decade or so.

Just hop over to the Dee, it drains Llyn Tegid where a queer unique fish, the Gwyniad lives, (un)fortunately I am a vegetarian

Hi Cyril Haearn , Please allow for my lack of "The Welsh"! Even my wife lost her use of the language, too long in Liverpool. Even her father who had Welsh as his first language lost his proficiency, 5 years ploughing through desert & so on chasing the ruddy Germans.
But would I be guessing correctly that your words have a connection with the flooding of a Welsh village so that scousers could leave the great unwashed?
If so I should warn you that my late brother-in-law's second wife blamed us all in quite a personal way, home of her family, although she was born in the "One Eyed Town", Birkenhead! Her father was a minister in Welsh Baptist Church.
Is she had had her way she would flood my home as well. Luckily for me the Liver Birds on the top of our famous landmark would have to be submerged before my terraced home would be at risk!
Few areas in the UK are free from blame in such practises. Nos Da. MM
