Time for the Winter Clothing, i'll be bound.

Post by landsurfer »

I have far too much cycling clothing.
Can't stick it on EBay as its all cheap stuff.
Not buying any item of clothing that cost more than my wheels ....
My cheap but good Decathlon wheels.

So for this Winter i will mostly be wearing;
BTwin bib tights.
BTwin light long sleeved under vest.
Tenn long sleeved jersey.
BTwin long sleeved knitted jersey.
BTwin 500 winter jacket.
BTwin rain jacket.
Planet X Mitts or Gloves.
FLR F-55 shoes, modified to lace up. (By me.) Not Dromarti, Davemarti.

Not all worn at the same time.

All of this was my winter wear for last year.
Very comfortable, and dry.

All of the above cost less than a single set of RAPHA bib tights.

Winter clothing for me is dead easy and simple
1x Buffalo jacket
1x pr tights
1x pr Aldi gloves
Buff
Boots , wellies or overshoes

Edit to add: it’s so mild at the moment none of its needed yet. Though I did swap all my wheels over to winter ones on the other day.

Winter clothing's even easier for me: same as I'd wear to go outside anyway, just like the rest of the year.

The main change in deep winter is that some items are thermal versions but we're a long way from that yet.

Yes, same as I'd wear for any reasonable time outside in deep winter.

I hope that boast never comes back to haunt you. 12C is my yardstick for change so mostly white legs in Scotland
As a young man I wouldn’t wear waterproof trousers, or fertiliser bags tied around the legs as they were in those days, I’d say I didn’t need them. I now believe, especially on painful days, maybe I was wrong.

I hate bib longs and the such like and went through last winter continuing to wear shorts even when it was 0.5C  although my morning ride at that time was a pre-work blast on a sporting circuit of about 14km taking about 35 minutes.

For my short 3km each way commute it's normal office wear plus gloves (no helmet as on quiet roads and cycle paths). But I will admit to using the car in heavy rain.

I've started the longs early this year. I rode the Trent Valley 100 last Sunday and my legs never got warm...
And don't say pedal faster, i enjoy cycling, I don't suffer from it ..... :)

We're only human (I'm only human) normally in training its spare long top, long track bottoms, two pairs of gloves, underwear, balaclava, spare good waterproof breathable top (plus the wind blocker), over two kilos of tools..................same kit all year round, if you carry ballast then make it useful.
I always say that if you are training what does it matter how heavy you are its just slower, so what.
My advise is to always carry spare clothing, food......back to the days of Dartmoor training that you were brainwashed with.
Pedal faster would and I have done near home.

So on a run coast to coast I studied the forecast, 17C that's ok................for the first time in a long (can't remember the last) while and if my chest is warm then my legs will be, but not, it was misty all day and my legs went cold :?
I had shorts, sleeveless top and a 100 gram shower proof top, only other equipment was a slimmed down tool kit, that won't keep me warm, food I had but did not need (eat but wasn't short of), only 3.5 litres of fluid which I carried for 150 miles on ride which I did drink.

Exposure, we were warned against, biggest problem when you only have yourself as company, as I found one day in most remote place in (claimed) Westmoorland. Me a boy scout who also wore boys brigade kit too, there's no fool like an old fool :)
If I had to do a repair it would of been more uncomfortable I know.
Not practicing what I ram down throats
More care next time.
I do feel the cold more especially when still nowadays, I need longs in the house and the fire has been on for some time now.
I still scoff at those using ultra low gears and "Mid Devon Chain Gang" all togged up whilst I am not, but I shouldn't.
Hits us all in the end, and I live and learn to use my own medicine.
