Bike insurance.

Post by kwackers »

I thought I'd have a look at separate bike insurance (I rely on house insurance currently).

So I included replacement cost of my bike of £1000 (Ridgeback Panorama)
£500 for accessories.
£1m personal liability.
And nothing else...

Cheapest quote was £140 - that's more than fully comprehensive insurance on my Kawasaki ZX12! (That's a 180bhp, 220Kg sports motorcycle).

That can't be right, there must be cheaper insurance surely?

Bicycles are much easier to steal than motorcycles are.

I think they've got wind that you are going to mount a 5 KW motor on your bike

Should get a discount for a tourer, nobody looks at them twice. (I've even accidentally left my unlocked on occasions and it's not gone anywhere).

14Kw. I wouldn't be seen dead on a bicycle that couldn't worry a Ferrari.

Thinking about it, I'm sure my house insurance is about £150 and I think the extra to insure my bike is only around £15 or £20.
That leaves £130 to pay for £60k contents, £1m rebuilding costs and a load of other 'benefits' whose names escape me.
Not sure what 3rd party limits are but they'll at least be in the hundreds of thousands if not a million or two.

I think bike insurance is defo a scam.

Excellent. That's nearer what I was expecting.
(I think Google must have it in for me)

You dont leave your house contents out on the street though, or do you?

No, but my point was that the house insurance covered my bike for less than £20, both on and off the property (and already includes 3rd party cover).

Google has it in for everyone and especially people planning to switch to e-bikes instead of self-driving cars.

My experience with specialist bike insurance is not good.
Had 2 bikes stolen earlier this year, shed break in.
Claimed for one under contents insurance, paid in full in 6 days.
Claimed for the other with specialist cycle insurance company Eversure Cycle Insurance.
After putting me in contact with a loss adjusting company they refused to pay out 22 days later.
Had listed my bike as BTwin 500SE and claimed for Btwin500.
This simple typo, the 500 is cheaper than the 500SE, was an undisclosed change, they said....
They refused to pay out .....

What is the price hike on subsequent house insurance costs, if you were to claim on a stolen bike?
It wouldnt just be an increase on bike insurance fees but on the whole house insurance fees.

I am personally of the self-insure school for cycles, even though I leave mine without a lock more often than with one. If your theft rate was high enough to make insurance worthwhile, they wouldnt cover you.

Have you checked the small print? I seem to recall that the insurance generally doesnt apply if you leave your bike in any situation where you would consider insurance worthwhile, like for example on a car bike rack while nipping into the supermarket.

Renewed in September with the same company we insured with last year and claimed for stolen bike as per previous post.
Premium went down £8.
We use Swinton brokers for our contents and building insurance.
