Lost Spare Car Key....Insurance Replace?
Hi,
There is a first for everything.
Lost my car keys which are mine, I am named driver on comprehensive cover, my partner is the policy holder.
We each have a key.
Policy says something like will replace locks etc, but I just want a spare key for me?
Key is coded thingummy.
Aviva car insurance, comp is mandatory lost keys cover.

The forum could give you a whole range of opinions and possibly even experiences of other members dealing with their own insurance companies in similar circumstances.
The only way to find out what your insurer will do for you under the terms of your policy is to ask them.

Hi,
Yes.
Do you ever get that feeling that if you say something, the otherside / person presses a button and the wheels are in motion which you can't stop.
I am not your average guy who almost never claims anything.
I just wonder (I just thought of this) well I suppose if you report key lost then insurance company's protect the insured by making sure that by changing locks the finder cant take the car?
And I now suppose that if the car is taken (not likely, slim chance the finder knows where I live) and I tell them I lost keys...........................

Aviva do make a thing about lost keys: they want you to report it and IIRC, they don't count it as a claim. One thing that's pretty common across insurance companies is that if you get a vehicle nicked, they are keen to see all the keys because they are quick to reject claims where a vehicle has been stolen through the negligence of the driver eg by leaving the keys in.
IME Aviva are like the others, good at collecting premiums, less alacrity with anything else.

PS One of the things with Aviva is they want eighteen quid just to give you the time of day over the phone.

Re: Lost Spare Car Key....Insurance Replace?
Our AA membership includes key replacement, and there was a tag on the car-keys ring. The cover includes ANY key that's on the ring, and the tab states that there's a £10 reward if anyone hands them in.
Meanwhile, the coverage includes ALL locks and keys for what's on the ring (house, bike, shed, whatever) ............... though I'm unclear how they know what's on the ring if it's never actually recovered. Seems like it's a passport to getting new locks and keys all round, and replaceing expensive defective car remotes. I have considered trying it out, as our last car had a defective key that would have cost £200+ to replace.
Meanwhile, our new car has Toyota insurance and it specifically states that it covers lost car keys, and no specification on the policy of which of us looses it. A lost key is a lost key.

If you decide not to go to the insurance company. There is another (affordable) way.
My key has 3 constituent parts.
1) Mechanical which can be cut at a reasonable price by a local keycutter.**
2) The remote, which makes up the bulk of the back of the key and is unclipped to change the battery.
These can be bought on line affordably (often with the mechanical bit) and "programmed" to your car by tricks with window buttons, wiggling indicator stems etc.
3) The security induction chip which is next to the mechanical bit. The ignition switch "reads" this when you put the key in to start the car. This is the expensive bit which dealers have a monopoly on and will cost you around £200 to buy and have programmed (with the rest of the key thrown in).
You only need the induction chip to start the car, you can make keys to get in the car (remote or mechanical) much more affordably and leave the master key in the car*.
If your car only costs £600 it isnt worth paying £200 for a spare key!
*preferably not in the ignition.
**though I have heard of people being refused.

And I'm not even going to start on the madness of technology and how it is making life more complicated, not easier, and why I have no intention of buying a new car when my current one gives up the ghost, and why this is a cycling forum because bikes make life easier and you can control the technology, and hasn't society gone bonkers when a key costs £200 and a wing mirror £200, and why a small charity called Intermediate Technology got it right for the Third World and now we need them here too and why modern cars are inappropriate technology and we are slaves to the firms that make them and yes, motorists should be punished for losing their keys given the harm they do to others and how happy I am to give the whole game a complete miss and just say No to this tragic farce that we call owning a car even though the car owns you and so and so on.
No, I'm going to keep quiet on this one.

natural Ankling have you checked the cost of a replacement keys. Also Timpson's can replicate a lot keys. If you have the original one they tape a small device to the side of it get you to go turn the car on then they incorporate the device in a new key. they quoted me 70 pound, it is not all branches but many of them offer the service.

Yours is a much more helpful reply than mine NUKe!

Re: Lost Spare Car Key....Insurance Replace?
Hi,
Update, basically I did nothing
BUT, when I realised I had lost keys I phoned my mate who has a shop nearby and I visited it that day.
He said a guy came in with some keys he had found.
What do you do with keys when you find them today? Nearest police station is how far away.
I went on the net and tracked down a site "Report my loss" which is a police site I think.
There was no option for lost keys so I just blagged it so the page would turn.
Missus says go to the local station.............so I waited a week to give a chance someone had handed them in, then I did nothing.
I emailed my mate with shop and a few days later he replied said guy came into shop and has left keys at station, two days after he found them.
So today I paid them a visit...........they let me in
I was presented with a bucket full of lost keys
Anyway I found my set, their not interested in whether there yours or not, it works, well it did for me, but only because I had knowledge that they were handed in.
If you did not know when the keys or if they were ever handed in then it would be pot luck to go to police station and find them.
What do they do when the bucket is full.......................I think two weeks was mentioned so I was lucky.
