Should we have a Thanksgiving Day?
Should we have a Thanksgiving Day?
Seems like we have all the other ones? Halloween, Black Friday
What would the meaning for us be?
Give our thanks we got rid of them 200 or so years ago?

Goes back to Harvest Festivals, first documented ones were Spanish but the practice was widespread already then.

Re: Should we have a Thanksgiving Day?
We should have lots more holidays and work less
31.10 was a *one-off* holiday in Germany this year, reformation day. Luther was actually against holidays (probably more against catholic rituals)
Now many German politrickians are talking about making 31.10 a regular holiday
The right sort of populism, +1!

If Luther were alive today and expressing the same views he would not be all that popular in Western Europe. He had very strict religious views, and he was certainly not liberal. Likewise the Founding Fathers of the USA. They wanted to create a society in which everyone followed their own Christian ways, to the letter.

A year after 19th March 2019, we can celebrate March 19th as British National Sovereignty Day!

yes they wanted to escape a tyranny so they could set up their own - and they have, with all those absurd fundamental christians who deny evolution and the rest
Re: Should we have a Thanksgiving Day?
The early settlers in eastern N America eventually managed to survive and get in a harvest, and TGD was in celebration from back then.Si wrote:To be fair Thanksgiving is a British invention....just happened to be abroad when they invented it.
Yes, it was an earlier Protestant Reformation festival(?) but as the early settlers were mainly Protestants, so the "tradition" was taken. Not necessarily British though.

Re: Should we have a Thanksgiving Day?
I went to Jamestown the first American settlement that actually suceeded. It was a salutory experience seeing the graves of the many pioneers who perished. You could almost sense their presence there on the peaceful river bank. Many Americans look back to that time with pride and fondness. With our turbulent history we dont have any equivalent. Some sort of national day would help to draw us all together though.

Delete Sovereignty, insert Disaster.
Re: Should we have a Thanksgiving Day?
The early settlers had a terrible time of it.
Maybe they knew it would be difficult, but better than what they were leaving behind. If they managed to even reach the New World it was a blessing.
Some were shipwrecked at Bermuda in the 1600's and spent years rebuilding a ship from the wrecked ones on the reefs, and then the survivors carried on to America.

North America was inhabited before the Europeans settled there, one understands
The first European to *discover* it was Prince Madog, from Wales of course
