I agree, they could be so employed, given what, a decade or two's conversion - and whatever financial investment it took to do that. What does an economy, even one the size of the US, do in the meanwhile?

...and in the meanwhile others were stepping into the breach to supply the demand - who might not have the same ethics as you.

The realpolitik is difficult, the moral argument much easier to make in comparison. What we have is perhaps best characterised as a failure of international will.

Sell to those allies that don't use the weapons to kill innocent civilians

To me, that others might behave in an immoral manner does not justify behaving in an immoral manner.

I agree and I think the US is the cause of a lot of these difficulties (e.g. their behaviour in the UK, ICC, etc). I think if their allies (e.g. UK) "grew a pair" and stood up rather than puppy-dogging down they might moderate a bit. That said, Russia and China are also major hindrances blocking the UN from acting.

Even over the current alleged murder in Turkey, I have found it interesting what commentators have been saying about turkey's inaction. Commentators seem to be saying that Turkey has proof (or exceptionally strong evidence) but is hesitating on acting as it want the US behind the action so it does not have to take the "push-back" should it start to act (mostly) alone. It's only commentators/correspondents but it does illustrate how the opinions and backup of allies is regarded as important (even it that backup is only staying silent and failing to condemn).

Meanwhile, a certain Mrs Trump seems intent on throwing spanners (sorry: "wrenches") in the West Wing Works. Is Melania set to be the least-loyal FL ever?

Maybe she won't be FL much longer. How many women has the T had? Is he trying to out-Henry Henry VIII? Is the axe being duly sharpened?

On previous form she is a typcal 'starf8888r', just wants to have her cake and eat it. She's at least as uncaring about refugees and immigrants as trump, but just wants people to think she is nice. If you don't believe me, check out the jacket she wore when going to the border to see the separated families, it said 'I'd don't care, do u?' on the back of it. And it is not just offensive, it is a specific slogan that, I am told, in Slovenia, where she comes from, is associated with a rather nasty fascist group. She doesn't believe in chain migration, and trump is dead against it, but she got her own family in via- chain migration. One rule for her, another for everyone else.

I have my personal suspicion (based on very little) that the marriage is already over but formalities are being delayed to avoid the PR implications for the president (probably reflected in the “settlement”). In public she is cold e.g. not wanting to even allow him to hold her hand. And Trump’s affair with the porn actress being so public with pay-offs, books, anotomical descriptions.

My suspicion is for the next few years she’ll live a life of fabulous wealth only duty being to stand within a few feet of Trump in public every now and again without hitting him. Then a respectable time after he is no longer President they will “amicably part” and she will think of a number with lots of zeros and no decimal point.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse - now appearing to take sides with suspected murderers:

And meanwhile, big T commissions a group portrait of himself and numerous other ex-POTI*, presumably to hang in the WW.

My thoughts were - how dare he put Lincoln in there! (admittedly, with his back to us). And Theodore Roosevelt (on right, with moustache) wouldn't be too happy either...

Someone commenting on the Grauniad pointed out the marked resemblance to another well-known painting:

Maybe I'm being a bit paranoia or doing the 1+1=22 but as the US mid-term elections get closer I've noticed a massive increase it hacking login attempts on my own web site. Normally it's just a background level of bots trying to exploit vulnerabilities and those are still pootling along as usual but on top of those I'm now seing vast numbers of login to admin'y accounts. I suspect/guess that they are looking for "abandoned" sites where their being taken over wont be noticed and they can happily post their disinformation and link to it as "another source" for some ludicrous rubbish. Reason for this suspicion is that the attacks are using very uninventive user credentials e.g. "psamatheadmin" with a password "admin123" - all at that sort of level of guesswork.

Apparently Trump cut business taxes from 35% to 21% and tax revenues have increased by $3.3 trillion!

But where is that increased revenue coming from and under what timescales. Changes to tax laws take time to come into effect (i.e. the day their are passed by Government is not the day the cuts start, then there are further delays as people tend to only submit accounts once a year ...). The US economy has been improving from measures in effect before Trump took office - there is a significant lag between Government decrees and real economic impact.

And where has the tax increases come from? From the everyday working people who are enjoying higher incomes as they are now being paid more per hour or from the existing billionaires who are now taking an even bigger slice of the profits (and thus paying more tax on their higher incomes).

A soundbite does little to prove anything. Life is more complex than three numbers. If we don't properly understand something we stand little hope of making good decisions.
