Well, yes and no. The volunteer bit - yes, usual British cheapskate methodology, applied to everything it can be (and a lot it shouldn't be). The need is absolutely driven by Brexit and the desire to "secure our borders" greater than we do now.

Not sure that's true. There has always been a debate about how best to secure our borders against various threats. That debate comes and goes, and maybe Brexit has brought it back to the foreground for a while, but it's always there. Apart from the migrant issue, that divides people, there are less controversial issues like dealing with the movement of endangered wild animals, guns and terrorists. Some of us also think turning a blind eye to drug trafficking is a bad idea. So for most of us there is a need for border security and the question is about resourcing.

On a related issue, in the school where my wife teaches, a recently advertised post for a science teacher attracted three applicants, none of whom was properly qualified. So the school has given up and re-assigned a PE teacher to teach science to the younger kids. This is a public sector profession so run down that potential recruits are turning away. As a society we need to re-prioritise, spend less on luxuries and more on the basics like educating our children and caring for the sick.

Instead of post code education and one exam tickets to elitist schools
