Table top map - literally

I stopped for coffee this morning at a cafe I use occasionally (in Shipston -on- Stour). Since my last visit the owner has put up new (historic) posters on the wall. But what particularly pleased me was that he'd pasted a Bartholemews 1/2 inch map to the table top. It was Skye and Wester Ross.

I love maps and can lose myself just reading them. Ordnance survey is the gold standard (in my opinion) in terms of detail and information. But Bartholemews are wonderfully colourful, in more ways than the colour on the sheet, and I still enjoy reading them. Indeed, they may actually be better for cycle touring.

Having cycled, camped and climbed in that area, I enjoyed my coffee and cake deep in memories. It's really nice when something out the ordinary, like this, happens.

The Bakery Cafe, in Sheep St. It's a proper bakery, with home made fare. But it has a small cafe area, with a small menu. They've always welcomed me as a cyclist.

The only downside is that Sheep St is very narrow at that point and there's no place to park your bike and keep an eye on it. That's not a problem for me because I chain my recumbent to a post about 20 metres down (where the pavement widens somewhat), and reckon that an opportunist isn't going to risk riding a 'bent!!

+1 for old maps, they are great to read when a book full of words is too much
The OS 1:63 360 maps contain so much information, I love reading maps of places I know or used to know
