Curiouser and curiouser.

It now transpires that KFC are in possession of plenty of chicken. It's just that it's in the wrong place, and they have to get rid of it.

Send it across the pond, that's what I suggest. Dip it in a tank of chlorinated water, it'll be fit for anyone over there....

Incidentally, if KFC really are substituting pork, that'll upset a lot of Muslim and Jewish customers. If they have any Muslim or Jewish customers, that is.

Well I watched the whole thing. Very salutary - and thought-inspiring.

First thing to say is, it's easy to be complacent: this is all happening thousands of miles away, "it doesn't apply to us..."

Are you sure? See here. Different problem, but almost as alarming. And a lot nearer home...

Next thing to say is, how many 'meat' products legitimately sold in our supermarkets are in fact MRM? Do you know what MRM is? Do you know how it's produced? Do you care?

What those poverty-stricken Filipinos may be subsisting on, may be disgusting to us, but if it's properly cooked it may do them little or no harm. Indeed it may be healthier than our highly processed meats like bacon or chorizo. What is better for them - unpalatable food or starvation?

I suppose as a non-meat-eater I do have an annoying tendency to be complacent. But we eat a fair amount of fish. I have sometimes seen infestations of nematodes (aka "herring worms" or "cod worms") when gutting fresh fish like mackerel. Disgusting? Certainly off-putting - although they're not harmful if the fish is properly cooked. I've probably overlooked the odd worm when preparing fish - and we still eat it!

We we first married, we had a flat in Southsea late 1973 to early '74.
Just out on Albert Road, there was a place called Anne's Bake and Take where they had glass-fronted ovens baking potatoes. Loads of different fillings available. Yum! :D

Seems as if it's a tattoo parlour now.

Very rare we get any sort of takeaway. If we do its either Indian or Chinese although we have loads of choices only 3 miles drive away and a Chinese, Indian and a chip shop in our village. I have spotted stuff being taken into a Chinese. Boxes of preprepared stuff. I think they all get stuff from a small number of wholesalers, thus it all tastes samey. Same for most Indians too. Boring…
There are a couple of high class Indian restaurants within 30 minutes drive, places that have won awards and are chosen for an evening out by well known Chefs like Tom Kerridge. They are pricy but a bit of a treat with different food.
In response to this dilemma we tend to cook our own stuff but instead of doing absolutely everythng from scratch we use preprepared sauces. http://www.swaadish.com is a favourite made by a local Indian family and this stuff from Liss Hampshire http://www.madhuban.co.uk Aldis curry sauces are good too, some are quite spicy. Rather than just meat or fish added to the sauce you can precook the meat or fish, marinate it beforehand and add vegetables like sugar snaps sweet peppers, onions and courgettes.
For chinese its simply Aldi sauces, not great but we have yet to find a better alternative?

We like Thai too, but that always warrants a restaurant trip. Fresh Thai is worth going out for.

As for KFC, couldnt care less it must be 20 years since we had one.
