Have you been to The Vanilla Pod? Our favourite by far.
Not been to the Vanilla Pod but looking at their offerings it looks great, will give it a whizz. Toms place is always chocca so never got in there. Our local favourites are Orwells a Binfield Heath (chefs were on Saturday Kitchen the other week) and for a lunch Shaun Dickens at the Boathouse (trained at la Manoir) at Henley, a great spot by the river. Both pricy but great for an occasional blowout.

Reuse, recycle, thus do your bit to save the planet.... Get stuff at auctions, Dump, Charity Shops, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Car Boots. Choose an Old House, and a Banger ..... And cycle as often as you can......
Do try it - it's a real unsung hero, and way better IMHO than the pub down the road IM(admittedly limited, based on a single visit)E.
Usually heads the Trip Advisor rattings for very good reason. We started going after someone "in the trade" insisted we try it. Not tried the two you mentioned, but also like Parky's pub not far away.

+1 for thread drift I understand that 'real' Indian or Chinese food would be unpopular in Europe, too spicy and strong There is or was a sport in Bradford, Wolverhampton and elsewhere, mind: a challenge to find and eat the strongest curries Does one do that in the south too?

Well, I have eaten local food in many places in China and India and most of it isnt too spicy and hot. As for curry contests thats usually just willy waving, there certainly are people down here in the Promised Land who engage in it.

I think we are becoming food obsessed. I have just returned from a week in Mallorca. I was staying in a large AI hotel. There were a lot of Spanish pensioners there, plus an assortment of English and German families. I was alone, so spent a fair amount of time when not out on the bike, people waching. The amount of food put away by people is amazing. Piles and piles of bread. Plates overflowing with food and going back for more. Pushing and shoving for food! Cakes and more cakes. Most of the people were overweight. Many obese. Young and old. The pensioners just waddled about. It actually started to put me off food and question my own diet. I watched all this, plus the waste. Good food left on plates and even half drunk glasses of wine just left. Returning to my room I switched on Sky News to see Syrian kids crying for food. Does anybody think food is now too cheap?

I guess they pay a flat rate for all one can eat Another dream holiday, cruising, looks less attractive now, read how dozens of people were fighting on a ship in the Pacific (can't just call 999), occasionally there is food poisoning on board

Bigjim, I believe those Spanish pensioners were probably from somewhere like Galicia, they are given free winter holidays by the Spanish government. I remember them when the hotel restaurant was about to open they all lined up outside and it was like an army of short fat Rugby front row forwards who charged in and stripped the place bare like a swarm of locusts LOL!
We experienced this on a coach trip to Morroco staying over at Torremolinus. The Spanish government provide it to keep the hotels going in tbe winter

Yes I am aware of the system. They have free food and board all week. They dominate the hotel. They do not receive free drinks in their free package. In the evening they swarm into the lounge, take all the seats and don't buy a drink all night. Quite an aggressive, rude mob. I would not go back. Re eating. I had an early 6am flight on the way out. I therefore last ate at 8pm the night before {a piece of toast]. I did not eat again until 2pm the following afternoon. I did not feel faint or bothered. I felt quite well actually. I think I may one of those who eats too much. Though I'm not overweight.
