Weather Forecast

Post by Mick F »

Here's the Met Office weather forecast for here.
Screenshot of their website from lunchtime today.

The max temp today was actually 10degC, not the forecast 4degC.
I seriously doubt that the minimum temp on Wednesday next week will be minus6.

Lived round here 33years, and it's never been as low as that ever.

Any bets?

Yes, I could agree with that ................ but the Met Office nearest forecast is for St Anne's Chapel .............. well out of the valley.
Lived here in the Tamar Valley for 21years in April coming, but for 12years before that, we lived in Drakewalls ............ out of the valley close to St Anne's Chapel.

Living in the valley, it's colder at night.

i think the max temp quoted on the forecast is in the shade so ignores any heating effect from the sun. The forecast now is pretty accurate so yes i am getting prepared for the minus 5 here on the somerset levels, :(
We dont want a repeat of 1978, 3 foot of snow here at the end of Feb. It was so fine we had 6 inches inside the front door entrance from snow being blown through the gaps around the door, draught excluders got fitted soon after. its currently 11 degrees C here but it doesnt feel like it with the wind picking up :(

Yep.
In the shade.
Our thermometer is on the north facing wall of the house on the outside of the porch. No heating from the house or the sun.

Just looked.
Dropped to 5degC
Could drop to zero maybe by morning maybe.

Easterly wind can do odd things even in Cornwall. When you live as far from the sea as you do :) you've got to expect it to be cold. -6 would be a bit unusual tho',
The fun starts when normal service is resumed and a sou'westerly tries to rain on the frozen land. Probably the only time I've ever seen a proper snowfall in Cornwall (It didn't last, everything was as soggy as usual the next day)

Mrs Mick F used to be the Lollipop Lady in the village for ten years.
We lived at the top of the valley in Drakewalls back then, and she would walk down Gunnislake Hill in the morning, then walk back, and then down again in the afternoon, and back again.

One winter's morning, the road was blocked with snow and with cars abandoned. The snow plough got stuck!
She walked down ok, did her duty, and walked home again.

Come the afternoon, the snow had gone, but the abandoned cars were still there, and the snowplough as well.
No snow, it had all gone.

My father always said the SW could be a bad place for snow when it occured . It often drifts too when it comes.
Maybe the colder air hadn't reached as soon as the Met Office thought.
It went significantly colder late afternoon here in West Wales.

Next week is Brass Monkey Weather if the forecast is correct.
Navy folk may know the origin of this unusual and mildly humourous descriptive term?
It's not what immediately springs to mind though!
But rather more to do with the age of swashbuckling sailing and exploration.

.....

I think the issue with forecasts has become that, forecast 4 degC and get 10 degC and everybody is happy 'cos it's nice and warm; but forecast 6 degC and get 4 degC and everybody is complaining about the Met Office. It's "**** covering" and has (for me) made Met Office forecasts worthless.

Just heard on R4 weather forecast that it dropped to minus6 in parts of Oxfordshire last night.
It dropped to plus2 here and cloudy.

Here's this morning's missive from the Met Office for here. I see Wednesday has been changed a tad.

-4 °C and glorious sunshine here on the Somerset levels at 8.00 am.

The BBC weather app forecasts -1° here for 8.00 am but I suspect this is skewed to the temperature expected in Taunton, the nearest large town to us. Too cold for a ride this morning (after lunch maybe) and there will be plenty of ice on the roads which stay wet due to seepage from the rivers. Several of the roads are below sea level and the 2 main rivers here Tone and Parrett are tidal up to the moor below us. Walk to the community cafe this morning for coffee and cake of course. :D
