David Byrne, cyclist.

Post by Mike Sales »

Listening to David Byrne of Talking Heads on Desert Island Discs .
I did not know he was a cyclist. I will have to get hold of his Bicycle Diaries.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

There were a few cyclists in bands

Kraftwerk were well known for being dropped off the Tour Bus with their bikes and cycling the rest of the way.

At some points they were clocking up 200 km per day.

I’ve been a Jethro Tull fan for 50 yrs. when I rode Audax John Evan the keyboard player was also an AUK. I always hoped I’d be on a ride with him but it never happened. Just had a google of him and found this
no longer as a piano player, having suffered hand damage as a result of long-distance bicycle touring and rallies throughout the world in his middle years.

Another aside....I was at a Tup Sale where a farm manager was buying tups for Ian Anderson's (JT) estate on Skye. Speaking to him I mentioned I’d been down in York last week to see his boss. His reply, "I wouldn’t cross the f******** road to see him."

The David Byrne book is a good read. I saw him and Talking Heads in '77 at the Roundhouse in Chalk farm

along with The Saints and The Ramones, happy dazed!

Here's a clip of him cycling in New York.

He uses a Montague folding bike whilst on tour.

I imagine it has it's own flight case.

And from the world of comedy, Dave Gorman (modern life is goodish) is a cyclist, has cycle toured to get to gigs on one of his comedy tours and has even frequented this forum.

I once stopped alongside a cyclist at some lights, and asked for advice on the Camden>St Pancras cycle path options. It turned out to be Rob Newman. He rides a bike and stops at lights. Good man!

His recent work is heading in an interesting direction. More interesting than St Pancras.

Paul Heaton, ex-Housemartins and Beautiful South is another noted muso-cyclist.

Mick Talbot and Paul Weller of The Style Council are (were?) both cyclists. Talbot even used to wear his cycling shorts on stage.

Perhaps it was more about fashion than exercise or utility. I don't know.

Just wondering whether he used to listen to Road to Nowhere when he was on his turbo?

+1, Technik durch Vorsprung, probably a good preparation for standing on stage pretending to be robots

+1!
Mind, he gave up cycling a hundred years ago when motor traffic got too much
When he was knighted he cycled to Stoke Prior to tell his dad
+99 for Elgar and Malvern
The bike has no spokes, where is the statue?

Philip Larkin, there is a larger-than-life statue of him on Hull Paragon Station, not cycling, hurrying to catch his train

It's in Hereford, on the green alongside the cathedral.
