Cambridge or Oxford, which do you prefer?

Browsing some old copies of the Gazette, in the December 1995 issue Bob Wells bleated about cycling in the City of screaming tyres*, Oxford
Apparently the previous issue of the Gazette had claimed cycling in Oxford was pleasant

My name is often misspelt or pronounced wrongly, I dinnae mind, it is a chance to show magnanimity

An interesting article how postrgrad work there is a the preserve of the rich with eye watering fees, little or no bursaries and the only need is to find an academic who will over see your work, maybe no even an interview. Thus all the rich from the world whoa re over represented, get a chance to add a higher Oxbridge degree to theit cv, but few from the UK with limited means

I've only ever been to these cities to watch football matches and from this brief experience I prefer Cambridge.

I was at Cambridge in the 70s and early 80, under- and post-graduate, and it cost me nothing. How times have changed.

Increasing the supply of graduates does not increase the demand for them from employers. Graduates with the academic ability which matches that of students of the 60s and 70s when the higher education system was much smaller and harder to enter won't be working in call centres. They'll have the good jobs graduates have always had.

Nobody is forced to attend university and people who do end up with a useless degree can't blame anyone except themselves. They should have done some research before going to university and investigated the likely demand for graduates of their academic ability in the discipline they intend to study.

My nephew is of average academic ability and knew it from his schooldays. He did this research with the help of his teachers and his family. He concluded that the many degree courses available to him were useless, so he left school and got a job. His brother is much more able academically, went to a good university to study an in demand course and is in no debt whatsoever as his employer paid off his student loan debt as a golden hello.
