Con of the Week?
Con of the Week?
so it seems we or the American public have been conned again
"A little girl who became the public face of US migrant family separations was not taken away from her mother at the US border, says her father."
"Carlos Ruiz, the Border Patrol agent who stopped Ms Sanchez and her daughter, said the mother was asked to set the child down so she could be searched.
"The kid immediately started crying as she set her down," said Mr Ruiz. "I personally went up to the mother and asked her, 'Are you doing OK? Is the kid OK?'
"And she said, 'Yes. She's tired and thirsty. It's 11 o'clock at night." "
no wonder Trump's supporters support him. I would when I see such lies and manipulation

Time hang your head in shame for such shoddy "journalism"
The photographer a Pulitzer prize-winner must have known what it would be used for other wise it was just a picture of a kid crying, as they all do?

Re: Con of the Week?
Your posts are normally right wing, so this one is not surprising. Anecdotal evidence never does much good for sentient, reasoned argument, and this is no different. The truth is that what has been happening at the US- Mexico border recently has just one single episode in history to be compared with: Germany 1932-1943 If Trump and his acolytes had popped up in Europe they'd be fringe party lunatics with little appeal and complete impermanence. Sadly too many Americans are intellectually indolent, and this is what we get as a result.

I think the image is pandering to Trump's ego. He loves being on the cover of magazines, loved having everybody talking about him, loves being the centre of attention.
But as image, it is intended to illustrate a point. It's what many images do. And it does successfully illustrate the point.

R4 this afternoon recounted Gunmmer giving his daughter a burger whilst on film during the BSE crisis.
The little girl cried and refused.
Why?
Because it was too hot.

Re: Con of the Week?
Many years ago I remember reading an article about the infamous "Stroop photograph" taken during the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, which purports to show a little boy amongst others, with arms raised, being escorted apparently to his death in the extermination camps.
The article, which as it happens appeared in a Jewish newspaper, cast doubt on the assumptions surrounding this photo. It asserted that an adult then living in America (I think) was claiming to be the boy in question, i.e. that he had survived the Holocaust.
As far as I know, this claim was never verified, but neither has the boy in the photo ever been identified, nor has it been proved that he perished in the Holocaust.
My point in stating this parallel? Photographs etc. may not necessary be all they seem to be, but neither should these doubts be exploited so to discredit the campaigns built on far more overwhelming evidence.
Unfortunately that's just what populism brings about, nowadays...

The BBC gives an article that describes "the bigger picture"
"At the heart of it was the Trump administration's decision to prosecute all adults who try to cross the US-Mexico border illegally, many of whom plan to seek asylum in the US.
Because migrant children could not be put in custody with their parents, they were separated. As a result, more than 2,300 children were removed at the border between 5 May and 9 June."
"As the adults are being charged with a crime, the children that come with them are being separated and deemed as unaccompanied minors.
As such, they are placed in custody of the Department of Health and Human Services and sent to a relative, foster home or a shelter - officials at those places are said to be already running out of space to house them."
presumably the laws of the land there dont allow parents to keep their children whilst in custody - same in most countries?
" Mr Sessions ( Jeff Sessions, the attorney-general ) repeated the point in a speech in Louisiana three days later.
"We do not want to separate parents from their children, you can be sure of that," he said. "If we build a wall, if we pass some legislation, if we close some loopholes, we won't face these terrible choices."
a problem of their own making maybe but really have we done any thing different at Calais = our wall, a moat?
We have solved the problem by saying we will only take people from the camps near eg Syria rather than doing a Merkel? and we know what is happening in Europe now?
The USA have a massive illegal immigration problem?
Those figures are just those caught

Re: Con of the Week?
here is the Spectators views comparing the way Trump wants to handle the migration problem and the EU's and concludes Trumps maybe be more humane
"The photographs of children in cages at US migration centres, apparently separated from the parents with whom they illegally entered the country, do not reflect well on the Trump administration. Talking tough on migration helped the President to win the election but there is a difference between building a wall and carrying out a policy which appears to use cruelty as a shock tactic.
Yet there is a policy towards migrants that is ultimately far crueller, and which is being pursued beneath our noses in Europe. That is to tempt migrants into unseaworthy boats to cross the Mediterranean.
Last year, according to the International Organisation for Migration, 3,116 people died attempting to reach European countries from North Africa by sea, in addition to 5,143 deaths in 2016. However demeaning the treatment meted out to Mexicans caught after a failed dash across the US border, it is not killing them.
European governments cannot claim they bear no responsibility for these deaths. Migrants are taking the risks because, in the vast majority of cases, their journeys are successful — and if they land, they probably get to stay. This is due to EU policy on migration.

The situation in the USA is a consequence of the Democrats wooley minded unwillingness to take decisive action and support the builidng of Trumps wall ?

But if the journey from Mexico involved a hazardous sea journey rather than a land crossing who knows what deaths we might be seeing? As for the European migrant issue, I find it rather ironic that France was censuring the Italian government for closing its ports to migrants yet it is France (and Britain) which share the major part of the responsibilty for fact that a chaotic Libya is now the place from which so many Africans head to Europe.

Re: Con of the Week?
is this as big a story as the girl who claimed to have seen iraqi troops pulling babies out of incubators and throwing them onto the floor?
a girl who turned out to be the Kuwait ambassadors daughter who hadn't been home for months.

He did it to convince us beef was safe. It wasn't, so maybe his daughter was better informed than he was, or just not willing to risk her life in a publicity stunt.
It probably was just too hot though.
Re: Con of the Week?
And the EU nonsense goes on and on
"according to the UN's refugee agency, with 220 people believed to have died in the space of several days last week."
Trumps polices are not nice but not lethal?

Re: Con of the Week?
I see.
So you would then blame the policies of the EU countries for the deaths of so many would-be migrants?
One might equally blame the engineers who constructed the railway lines leading to Auschwitz, for the Nazi Holocaust.
