Thread drift alert. Again, sausages??

Sausage production is an industry in Cumberland due to PGI status. 175 year old production in the village of Waberthwaite for example. Isn't that an industrial heritage site worthy of pilgrimage. Any company producing a craft product for 8 generations of the same family is worthy of mentioning IMHO.

A building site is construction not industry. They're not producing a product in the same way as mining, iron making, cotton spinning and sausage making IMHO. Besides they took to long.

Given that the market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland exists —and, having stayed there on several occasions, I can state with confidence that it does … or has done until quite recently— it stands to reason that Westmorland must exist so that Appleby has a place to be.

(I wonder if that's the location of Paulatic's photograph? It looks very familiar.)

Had to check the accuracy of my memory but Wiki confirms that Appleby-in-Westmorland only took that name with the abolition of Westmorland as a county.

The town's name was simply Appleby, until the local government changes of 1974. When a successor parish was formed for the former borough of Appleby, the council effected a change in the town's name, to preserve the historic county's name.

On a similar sort of tack, at one stage Leeds City Council started using the address Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, which seemed a bit silly because as a county borough, Leeds was not part of the West Riding although it was within its boundaries.

IIRC the county changes were administrative changes only with the previous counties officially still existing. That's certainly the case with the important counties like Lancashire and Yorkshire counties.

I did read somewhere officially Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire still remains making the three shires stone somewhere up Wrynose pass still accurate.

Certainly true about old Lancashire boundaries since the Lord lieutenant of Lancashire escorts the Queen as far north as coniston village. IIRC she was in coniston during the last year or so on official business and the person holding that position was with her.

My mum is still proud of being from Lancashire and Liverpool.

The Westmorland Gazette is still a good read. Based out of Kendal it is famous for their long running "spot the collie dog" competition run every week in the print newspaper. It's actually fiendishly hard to win it.

T'other place is Amberley and the museum in the old chalk pits, they have cycle rally each year, which is always worth a visit in itself.

Also famous because it starred in a James Bond Film!

Saw a book about offshore oil in the North Sea, will anything remain of that?

There is a great place in Berlin for railway enthusiasts, a railway yard that was abandoned decades ago, now it may be visited, there is a rusty locomotive, art with railway motifs, lots of nature (S-Bahn Preisterweg, not far from Suedkreuz)
Buy a ticket from the machine for €1, I was asked to show mine, no sure what happens if one is caught without a ticket

Queen Street Mill in Burnley. A steam-operated weaving shed. Not a sanitised National Trust place, a real working place, which feels much as I think it would have done when still working (it operated commercially well into my lifetime).

Currently not easy to visit due to cuts to LA funding by central government meaning the county council can't afford to keep it open much of the time.
But there are some days you can go. And they also do booked tours.

The sound is amazing- even though when I last went only a few looms were operating, the noise was almost unbearable. What sheds were like when 200 looms were running ( like when my ancestors were weavers locally) I can't imagine; no wonder weavers could lip-read. And the engine is beautiful (and silent). IIRC it/she is called Peace.

A long time since I was there, I recall it as a terrific Victorian 'castle' but don't recall the mines bit, and that would definitely be beofre the changes you mention. Time for another visit, methinks.
