I supported Labour in those days and I don't remember feeling that they were going to win the next election. The Falklands just confirmed labour's weakness.

I think the SDP were ahead of Labour (and Conservative) in the opinion polls (if you believe those) even before the Falklands conflict erupted. Whether they could have won outright a GE staged at that moment, is questionable. The FPTP system does not favour parties whose support is too evenly spread across the country.
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.

I was optimistic that the SDP was about to break the mould.
